First Aid - Vocabulary Lesson

Description

In this lesson Ss will learn vocabulary in the context of injuries and illnesses. Ss will read a British Red Cross quiz about first aid focusing on the highlighted words in the text and then decide what they mean. During this exercise students will also practice pronunciation through drills. After this Ss will complete the actual first aid quiz and then discuss in groups and pairs what they've read and discuss their own experiences.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, practice and review of medical words in the context of injuries and illnesses

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of injuries and illnesses

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Engage the students by playing a game of hang man, where by they guess the words FIRST AID.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Give Ss HO1 and tell them to look at the pictures and decide in pairs what they think first aid is. Tt to demonstrate through role play if necessary. Ask Ss about their own experiences e.g. Has anybody broken a leg. Has anybody given first aid to someone with a broken leg?

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging more specific information reading task

Ss will be given time to read a text on HO1 with 6 multiple choice questions on first aid. Some words will be highlighted and Ss will have to decide in pairs what they think the words mean. I will then check answers as a WG and nominate Ss from the pairs to see if they got the meaning of the words. Follow up with pronunciation drilling of the highlighted words.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks.

Ss will now complete the 6 question first aid quiz themselves working in pairs. The answer keys will be displayed in various places around the classroom and Ss will check their answers. Afterwards in 3 groups Ss will discuss amongst themselves how to treat choking, burns and a bleeding wound.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss will given HO2. They will read the questions on the sheet and discuss among themselves their own experiences of first aid and illness. Afterwards Ss will discuss their answers as a WC.
