Subsidiary Aims

Procedure (12-16 minutes)
T-S B introduces herself - I'm Brandi and I'm from Detroit, MI and I'm excited to get to know you! It can be fun and a little scary sometimes to get to know someone new, so let's play a game to make it easy! Are you ready? This game is called Like, Love, Loathe. T-S, S-T But before we start, what does like mean? T-S, S-T How about love? What does it mean? T-S, S-T And finally loathe. What does it mean? After checking on vocab, if students demonstrate they do not know the word(s), teacher will provide an answer & example, in particular for word, loathe, if needed: loathe mean a very deep, long dislike of something, it is similar to the word hate. I loathe seeing people throw trash on the ground instead of putting it in a trashcan. I just told you one thing about me - get ready! Here's how we'll play our game!
Since we know what, like, love, and loathe mean and we're getting to know each other here's how we'll play: Please say your name and tell us one thing you like, one thing you love and one thing you loathe. After your group mate has answered what they like, love, and loathe, pick only one of their answers to ask why they either said they like, they love it, or they loathe it. I'm Brandi: 1)I l like eating cool and fruity frozen yogurt 2) I love grocery shopping 3) I loathe trash being thrown on the ground and not in a trash can Now, you can ask me only 1 question about 1 of the things I said; you can ask me why I like it, or why I love it, or why I loathe it. What will we say? One thing we like, one thing we love & one thing we loathe. Will we ask them a question about all of their answers? No, we will only pick one to ask them why they feel that way about it. We will take 5-7 minutes
What was there anything in particular that students found most interesting to lean about their classmate? Did they find anything in common? Or completely different? What was it? ***Alternate*** We will close the timer on the exercise to allow students to talk about the icebreaker - Did they like, love, or loathe it and why? What improvements could be made?
