Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about instincts and rapid cognition by Malcolm Gladwell in the context of society and every day life
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide clarification of idioms and lexis in the context of first impressions either for people or things.
-
To provide fluency speaking practice in a class discussion among learners in the context of trusting instincts.
Procedure (39-45 minutes)
After building a brief rapport, the students are going to discuss and share their ideas about trusting instincts and making important decisions.
Students will become familiar with some idioms and do a matching activity to understand the meaning of each one. They will have access to Google Forms and match by using arrows.
The teacher is going to share a Google Forms link. So Ss will be able to read the gist questions first so that they are given a general overview of the reading. As soon as they get familiar with the questions, the teacher is going to share the reading, so they will be able to get the main idea of the text. They don't have to worry about new words or expressions; they will be clarified.
After the pre-reading discussion, the teacher is going to share another Google Forms link, and the learners are going to read the questions to be solved after the second reading. They are expected to pay attention to the questions and get answers properly. Once they check their possible answers, they are going to discuss with their classmates and check whether those answers were correct or not. When they finish their discussion time, the teacher will assess their performance and tell them the correct ones.
In this stage of the class, the students are going to discuss some questions based on the topic studied, so they are expected to use the idioms seen as well as the new vocabulary from the reading. They are going to associate the questions with their real life and context, so they will be more confident when speaking.
