Description

In this lesson, the students will read a text about city and country life. Then, they will compare the city life and the country life.

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about a change in the life in the context of city and country life.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification of language used for things you like and don't like in the context of city and country life.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will say :'' This is the last lesson of the last day.What are you going to do in Bairam holiday? I'm going to go to Izmır to visit my family.'' An I will talk about my hometown İzmir. I will show the pictures of my family's houses and talk about a movement from country to the city. ''When my father retired, my family moved to Dikili, because they were tired of crowd and noise. And the cost of living was high in city center. Dikili is far away from city center. They bought a summer house and started to live in that house until last summer. In our previous lesson,I told about my father's heart attack. They couldn't find a good hospital in Dikili. After that event, they decided to move to city center.'' I will pre-teach: cost of living (the amount of money we need to live in a place)

Pre-Reading/Pre-teach Vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students will work in groups and discuss 3 questions. 1.Do you live in a city or in the country? 2.Do you like where you live? Why or why not? 3.Would you like to move house? If yes,where to? Why? The instructions will be on the board. When they finish, I will elicit some of their ideas. Ex.1 At this stage, I will give extra vocabulary while they are giving answers: teenager ( someone who is between 13 and 19 years old)

Prediction Task (4-5 minutes) • To encourage students to think about content of the text.

The students will work in groups. I will give them a handout. On the handout there will be 6 statements. They will read the sentences and choose the one they agree with.Then, II will ask for a reason. Instructions:Work in groups. Which of these sentences do you agree with? Ex.2

Reading for specific information (4-5 minutes) • To practice reading for specific information and to familiarise learners with the text.

At this stage, The students will look at two photos. Whey will work individually and try to guess: which person agrees with which statement. Later, they will read the text and check their answers with their partners and I will show the answer key on the board. Ex.3

Reading for Detail (7-9 minutes) • To practice reading for datailed comprehension for learners to understand the text in depth.

The students will read the text and answer 7 questions. They will work individually but when they finish, I will ask them to check their answers with their neighbors. Then I will ask them to show the sentence where they have found the answers. Instructions: Read the text and answers the questions. There are 7 questions. Where did you find the answer. Underline please.

Useful Language (5-6 minutes) • To provide and clarify the language which learners may find useful for completing the speaking practice.

I will clarify some verb patterns.I will show two example sentence and ask for 2 verbs: ''want & love''. I want to spend more time with my family. They love living in the city. I will underline and elicit: Want is followed by infinitive. Love is followed by V+ ing. I will give two different examples: I want to go on holiday. / I love drawing. Instructions: Now look at the text again, and find these verbs in the text and tell me what comes after them. I will ask them to write the answers in the correct column on the board.

Freer Practice 1 (6-7 minutes) • To develop oral fluency on the topic.

I will pair the students. They will have 10 cards on the desk. At each time, one student will have a card on which there is a picture. He will talk about the picture. Other student will guess about the place. Is it in city or in the country?

Freer Practice 2 (7-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to personalise the topic.

I will re-pair the students and name them as ''country'' and '' city''. I will give them a handout of useful language to make them use it in the task. Instructions: Country! You will convince your friend that the country is the best place to live. City! You will convince your friend that the city is the best place to live. Then I will make them change their partners one more time. At the end, I will elicit some of their opinions. Did they agree or not?
