Job Interview, 8b
Upper-Intermediate level

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for the job interviews

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a coversation in the context of job interviews

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

3-4 caricatures related with the job interviews are projected on the white board. The T asks some questions like; -"What's happening in these caricatures?" -"Do you like interviews?" -"What do you think about the questions asked during the interviews?"

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

The Ss are asked to read a short text about preparation for a job interview individually in a minute and answer some questions given as hand-out with the text by discussing them in pairs. ICQs: Are you going to read the text in pairs? During the WCFB, the T focuses on the questions that an interviewer can ask.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Following the questions, the T asks "When the interviewer asks us such questions, what shall we do?" and then asks the students to complete the sentences by matching them with the phrases and check their answers in pairs. T answers the first one and hands out the exercise. T asks from a student who completes first to write the answers on the WB and again asks WC if there's any disagreement.

Clarification (2-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Now T asks the students to categorize these answers according to the categories given in the handout in pairs. The answers are checked with the whole class and T asks if there's any disagreement.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The T asks the students to fill in the gaps and then match those with the questions given in the hand-out individually. While they're cheking their answers with their partners, the T gives the answer key to the Ss. T asks if there's any disagreement.

Semi-Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The T asks from students to write 5 sentences about their current job, their past experiences and their strength and weaknesses in a piece of paper. T takes the papers and collects them in a box and mixes them. T asks from the students to choose one paper from the box randomly and tell them to advise her/him on what kind of job would be best fo her/him. After choosing the papers, the Ss share their advices with the WC. Depending on the time, the T might omit this activity.

Free Practice (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The T changes the places of the Ss and tells them that they'll be interviewers and interviewees. Then ask them to prepare a role play using the questions from the previous exercise. The interviewees will try to be successful and pass the interview. One of the pairs share their dialogue with the WC and asked if s/he has passed the interview.
