Main Aims

  • Help students distinguish and use Present Simple and Present Continuous accurately in simple spoken communication.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Reinforce the difference between routine and actions happening now.
  • Improve fluency with basic sentence structures.
  • Strengthen accuracy with verb to be in context.
  • Build confidence in short, guided speaking tasks.

Procedure

Activation (25-30 minutes) • Activate prior knowledge and review target structures through dynamic interaction.

The teacher organizes a miming activity where students take turns acting out actions. The rest of the class observes and identifies what is happening. The teacher guides students to produce short sentences describing the actions and briefly checks whether the action refers to a routine or something happening now. The activity is conducted at a quick pace to maintain energy and participation.

Vocabulary (13-15 minutes) • Gain more vocabulary.

Vocabulary: Upcoming event, reminder note, written message, arrival time, front desk, medical equipment, booster vaccine. Diabetes mellitus, Chronic kidney disease (CKD),Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, Heart disease, Cancer (neoplasia) -Teacher writes each word on the board. -Teacher gives one clear example sentence per word. -Students repeat pronunciation. -Each student produces one sentence per word.

Review (23-25 minutes) • Reinforce understanding of form and use of Present Simple vs Present Continuous.

The teacher presents model sentences on the board representing both tenses. Students analyze the sentences through guided questions focusing on meaning and use. The teacher highlights the key differences and reinforces structure visually. Students participate in choral repetition to consolidate correct forms.

Controlled Practice (18-20 minutes) • Strengthen accuracy in choosing correct tense forms

Students complete a structured written activity where they select or complete the correct verb form. They work individually while the teacher monitors closely. The activity is followed by whole-class feedback, with the teacher eliciting answers and reinforcing correct structures.

Speaking (18-20 minutes) • Develop confidence in asking and answering simple questions using target structures.

Students interact in pairs or small groups, asking and answering guided questions using the target language. The task is structured to ensure repetition of key forms. The teacher monitors, supports students as needed, and ensures participation from all learners.

Production (8-10 minutes) • Encourage simple communicative use of both tenses with increased independence.

If there's time left, students work in pairs to perform short question-and-answer exchanges using both Present Simple and Present Continuous. The teacher monitors and provides corrective feedback. Selected pairs share their exchanges with the class for additional feedback and reinforcement.
