The class will begin with very brief conversation about weekend trips taken in the past. This will be followed by examples of unexpected events that can happen on trips. Three slides showing interruptions will be show, and students will be asked to identify what happened. 1. They were driving in the desert and they got a flat tire (and the tire blew). 2. They were lying on the beach and she got a sunburn. 3. They were visiting Paris and he proposed.
Students will read a short text about a trip with unexpected events. They will first read for gist and a two question abut the text. Text: Last weekend, Anna and Mark went on a trip to the mountains. They left early in the morning because they wanted to enjoy the whole day. While they were driving to the mountains the sun came up. The sky looked beautiful. When they arrived the wind was blowing a little bit. They parked the car and went for a hike. While Mark was looking for birds with his binoculars they heard a loud noise. A deer ran across the trail in front of them! Later, while they were eating their lunch by a small lake it started to rain. They quickly packed their things and returned to the car. Even though it rained, they had a great time and decided to go back again soon. Question: What were the two unexpected things that happened to Anna and Mark?
Meaning: The class will analyze this sentence, identifying the two verbs and then (if the group is large enough) working in pairs to answer these questions: While they were driving to the mountains the sun came up. Did it happen in the past, present or future? Which action started first? Which action was longer? Which action was shorter? Did they keep driving after the sun came up? Which verb is in the Past Simple and which is in the Past Continuous? Form The class will read the passage again and highlight the Past Continuous verbs. As a group the class will complete the correct positive and negative structures for past continuous. POSITIVE I/He/She/It + ______ + verb + ing You/We/They + ______ + verb + ing NEGATIVE I/He/She/It + ______ + verb + ing You/We/They + ______ + verb + ing Pronunciation The class will reread the passage out loud, taking note of the regular simple past verbs. The rules for pronunciation will be presented: /ɪd/ ended – verbs ending in D and T /t/ worked – verbs ending in unvoiced consonant (k, s, ch, sh, f,p) /d/ lived -verbs ending in voiced consonant Each student will complete a wordwall exercise to group the -ed words based on their sound. -d Enjoyed Returned Arrived -t Packed Stopped Helped Reached -ed Rested Waited Started Decided
Students will select the correct verbs in the following sentences. They will make the corrections on Google slides. Each student will have one page. We will go over them as a group. 1. While I waited/was waiting for my flight, I saw/was seeing an old friend from school. 2. It rained/was raining when we arrived/were arriving at the hotel in London. 3. The speaking task will be to tell a 1 minute story about a time something unexpected happened while they were traveling. Students will first be given two minutes to make notes on individual google slides Then they will be placed in breakout rooms to each tell their story. If time they will be regrouped to tell their story a second time to a different classmate. The class will end with Delayed Error Correction.
