Description

In this lesson, students develop their listening for gist and listening for detailed comprehension skills through the New Year's resolution topic. First of all, students will learn new words related to the topic. Then will listen the audio for gist and detail. At the end of the lesson students will learn new collocations.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of verb collocations in the context of New Year's resoluiton

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To activate Ss' existing knowledge of the topic

The teacher gives different colour stickers and divides them according to the colours. The teacher divides the class into two (three if there are more students) groups. Each group should have around 4-5 students. The teacher plays the New Year music that is very popular in Turkey. (Under CC https://www.youtube.com/user/bisgenblogspot) The Students listen to the song and write their ideas on the papers and stick them on the board. The teacher looks at the words and phrases and asks why did they write it. Listen to the song. Write the words or phrases that come to your mind when you hear this song. When the music stops discuss and choose only best word or phrase and stick it on the board. Then the teacher shows the questions to discuss (1 Slide). Work in pairs. Discuss these questions. 1. How do people in your country celebrate New Year? 2. Do you make new plans on the first day of the New Year ? 3. Do people in your country starts new activities after New Year? If yes, what kind? The teacher asks some students share answers and elicits the word "New Year Resolutions" Resolutions - firm decision to do or not to do something

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher elicits some resolutions from students and presents Vocabulary task 2. Tick the phrases you know in box A. Tick the phrases you know in box A. Then match the words/phrases in box B with the verbs in bold. There is one word/phrase for each verb. The teacher gives the HO and monitors the students. The students first work individually then check the answer with their partner. The teacher nominates students to write correct answers on the WB. The teacher gives the two different coloured envelopes. One of them have a word "actually" and the student should contract the word. The second student has the definition of the word. "A word that you use to disagree politely or when you say something new." In small groups, 2-3 students work on the word "actually" and 2-3 will work on the definition. The first finished group need to write the word on the WB. Extra task if they finish very fast: make a sentence with the word actually. The teacher drills the pronunciation.

While-Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with gist listening tasks

The teacher shows the picture and presents the Listening Task 1. The teacher ICQ's the task: How many conversations you are going to listen? (Two) How many people are in the picture? (Five) How many letters do you see? (Five) What do you need to do? (Match the people to their NY's resolutions) The teacher plays the audio track. Monitors from the distance (no movement) if everyone is on the task. When the audio finishes the teachers ask students to check the answer with their partner. Then nominates the students to write the correct answer on the WB. NB! Listening track is 1.52 seconds long. The correct answer: A Jack - 0.22 sec B Meg - 0.34 sec C David - 1.31 sec D Ed - 0.58 sec E Val - 1.17 sec

While-Listening #2 (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

The teacher presents the Listening Task 2. The teacher asks students to find the Vocabulary task 2. Please, find the Vocabulary Task 2. Look again the words. Look at the people’s New Year’s resolutions. Fill in the gaps with the words from Vocabulary Task 2. The teacher first plays the demo. First, you will listen to the answer for the first sentence. Listen carefully. The teacher plays the demo then plays the audio file. The teacher plays the audio file again. The students work individually. Then check the task in pairs. The teacher nominates students to write the correct answers on the WB. Correct answer: 1. I’m going to work less and have more fun - 0.19 sec 2. And I’m going to have a holiday this year. - 0.22 sec 3. I’m going to move to Australia. - 0.35 sec 4. I’m going to do a computer course. - 1.01. sec 5. We’re going to get fit and Val’s going to stop smoking. - 1.16 sec 6. And David’s going to lose weight. - 1.22 sec 7. I’m going to do more exercise. - 1.29 sec 8. I’m not going to eat sweet things any more. - 1.31 sec

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher presents the Speaking Task 1. The teacher demos the Task by writing the names. Then asks the student 1 the questions: Happy New Year! Any New Year Resolutions? Then the teacher writes the students response. Then the teacher asks the second student and writes his answer. Then the teacher goes to other person and tells the students responses. The teacher shows the model of the conversation and also gives it to the students. The teacher monitors the students and takes notes of good and not good examples. Then the teacher shows the correct version of some sentences. - Any New Year Resolutions? - Yes, I have, actually. I am (not) going to learn Arabic - That's great! / Wow! - Thanks! Happy New Year! - Have you got any New Year Resolutions? - Yes, I am going to get fit. - Wow! - Thanks!
