Main Aims

  • To develop the students' reading skill by practicing reading for gist, specific information, and detail

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop the students' speaking skill through discussing "Magical Novels" in semi-controlled group activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll hang book covers on the board, thenI will start the lesson by asking the students this question: "Who has recently read a book ?"" In short," What was it about?" This is to lead the students into suitable context to read and speak about fiction and fact books.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I'll hand the students a handout to match the words with their meanings in pairs. Each pair checks their answers with the other. Then I'll give them model answers for feedback. Next, I'll highlight pronunciation.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

First. I'll ask the students to read "ONE HUNDRED YEARS of SOLITUDE and THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS" quickly and find answers to 5 quetions for reading for gist, Ex.3,p 32. Then I'll hand them a model answer for feedback. Next, I'll hand the students a handout with five questions to read the texts again for detail. They work in groups. After that, groups check answers with each others. Finally, I'll quickly highlight model answers dictated by the students on the board.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

All the students stand up gathering in groups to discuss literary genres (biographies, autobiographies, and novels-magical realistic)
