The Comparative form

Description

In this lesson, students will be introduced the comparative form through a listening task in the context of 'Geography quizzes'. As a lead-in SS will work in groups on a short geography quiz in the same context of the following listening practice. Following the lead-in SS will listen to the audio guess the general idea of the conversation and work on a listening for specific information practice. The Target language' meaning, form and pronunciation will then be presented to SS using marker sentences from the listening practice.Following the presentation stage SS will work on controlled and free practices. The last stage of this lesson is for the Sub-aim which is writing , SS are required to write a short quiz to and compete against each other .

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the comparative form in the context of 'Geography quizzes'.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a quiz in the context of 'geography quizzes'.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

Show a picture of ' let's do a quiz' on the WB to get SS' attention. Tell SS that I am going to test them through a quiz. Provide SS with the 'Geography quiz', divide SS into groups of 4 or 5 and ask them to work on this quiz together without using the internet. Remind them that they have only 2 min ICQs : Are you working on the quiz alone? No in groups Are you going to use you phone ? No How much time do you have? 2 minutes Answer key PowerPoint slides for WC feedback.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a listening practice.

Write three ideas on the WB - A geography exam. - A geography quiz. - A geography lesson. Ask students to listen to the audio and circle the main idea. Play the audio ( Two friends having coffee together, Mike is giving Wendy a geography quiz using the comparative form). WC feedback. Students listen to the audio again and work on a reading for specific information task. Students check their answers in groups. Provide SS with an Answer key.

Highlighting and clarification (5-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language and clarify the meaning, from and pronunciation of the target language

Write marker sentences from the listening activity on the WB. Canada is larger than China. Monaco is more crowded than Singpore CCQs: Are China and Canada the same size ? NO So when i say that china is larger tha Canada what am i doing? comparing How about the second sentence ? Am I still comparing? yes What am I comparing in the second sentence? Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Provide Ss with the Handouts. Students have to work on this in pairs and they are required to put the verbs between brackets in the present continuous. WC feedback drilling and error correction.

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Provide students with the Freer practice HO. Ss are required to works in groups of 3 or 4 and use the comparative form to write sentences in different categories . SS swap sheets with each and correct the mistakes.

Writing (4-9 minutes) • To practice writing of a postcard in the context of holidays.

Show students a template of a geography quiz. (easy,simple and short) Students work in groups and write their own quiz. SS have to compete in pairs with each other. Delayed error correction.
