Description

In this lesson, students will review what they know about past tenses and develop their skills on using the Past Perfect Simple and the Past Perfect Continuous in real life situations such as story telling. They will begin with a warm up about the context and a matching work of the vocabulary.Then they will listen to a text about urban legends and try to answer some questions using their prior knowledge. Then they will have some review practices and feedback. Finally, they will have some freer speaking practice to see if they have improved well enough to use the grammar skills given accurately.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of the Past Simple, the Past Continuous, the Past Perfect Simple and the Past Perfect Continuous in the context of urban legends.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in conversations about urban legends.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the context of the urban legends.

T greets SS and have a little chat with them. T chests HO#1 and says '' Here you have 4 questions, I want you to read the text and answer these questions. ICQ's How many questions do you have? (4) Have them check their answers with their partner. '' Check your answers with your partner.'' T delivers A.K As a FB ask some of them '' What is the text about'' '' Do you know any urban legends ? ''

Listening Task (5-8 minutes) • To practice listening for specific information and to contextualise and introduce the target language.

T chests HO#2 and says '' Here you have 3 different urban legends.'' ''I want you to listen and fill in the gaps with one word.'' ''Work individually please.'' ICQ's How many words are you going to put in the gaps?'' (One) ''Are you working alone or together?'' ( Alone) T delivers the HO#2. Have SS check their answers with their partner. Use OHP to display the answers.

Highlighting target language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight the target language so that the learners are focused on it.

T divides SS into pairs. T chests HO#3 and says '' Here you have 3 sections A,B,C '' '' Read all the sections and answer the questions.'' ''You have 5 minutes.'' '' Work alone please.'' ICQ'S ''How much time do you have ?'' 5 minutes ''Are you working together or alone?'' Alone. After they have finished, have them check their answers with their partner. Use OHP to display the questions. Give board markers to the students who have the correct answers. Give WC/FB.

Clarifying Target Language (8-10 minutes) • to clarify meaning, the pronunciation and form.

T points out to the two sentences in section B on WB. ''The boat had been sailing in calm waters when a cow fell from the sky.'' T asks CCQ's Did they sail over a period of time ? (Yes) Did the sailing start in the past? (Yes) Did they sail until the cow fell from the sky?(Yes) Which action was in progress ''sailing'' or ''falling from the sky'' ( sailing) ,''Before they took off from their Siberian airbase, the plane’s crew had stolen some cows.'' T asks CCQ's Is this sentence in the present or in the past? ( Past) Which action took place before the other '' taking off'' or ''stealing some cows.'' (stealing some cows.) T highlights the form by using these sentences; ......., she hadn’t read the instructions.( T elicits the form of past perfect simple) The boat had been sailing in calm waters,.........( T elicits the form of past perfect continuous. T highlights the pronunciation of both sentences and shows the stress.

Language Practice (5 minutes) • To provide controlled practice focused on using the language accurately.

T chests HO#4 and says '' Here you have another famous urban legend.'' ''Read the text and choose the correct verb forms.'' ''Work alone please and you have 3 minutes.'' ICQ's How much time do you have? Working together or alone? Have them check their answers with their partner. Project answer key on the WB. Give WC/FB via discussing problematic answers.

Language Practice #2 Semi-Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide controlled practice focused on using the language accurately.

Pair the students before giving instructions. This time, the students are given another gap fill exercise, and they have to choose the correct tense of the verbs in the brackets. T chests HO#4 and says '' Here you have 6 questions.'' '' I want you to fill the gaps with the correct form of the verbs.'' '' Work with your partners.'' ( Consider the number of SS and pair them according to the number of students.) use OHP and display the HO on WB Monitor and give board marker to the SS who have the correct answers. Give WC/FB.

Language Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide freer oral practice and use the language productively

Group the students into different pairs. T chests HO#6 and says ''Here you have two different urban legends.'' ''Each partner will get a different text.'' ''I want you to read the story and write 5 words from your stories as a reminder.'' ''You have 3 minutes.'' ICQ's Are you going to write words from the story? Yes. T gives a clear stop sign. T gives instructions; ''Please face down your handouts.'' '' ı want you to tell the legends to your partner in your own sentences with the words you have taken.as notes.'' Monitor them while speaking take notes and do a delayed FB on the WB.
