Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and specific information listening practice using a text about impact of age on different situations in the context of achievements in life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of make and do collocations and some idioms in the context of achievements or challenges in life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students match the pieces of the people they have. Pair up according to the matching person, only describing the picture without demonstrating it. Then with their matching couple, they try to find related info on page 68. Then, they answer questions in exercise D.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students practice the key idioms and collocations for the listening usin Wayground.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students listen and note keywords while matching the speakers to the visuals. (Pair check)

While-Listening #2 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students focus on exercise F p.69, listening for details. The teacher gives them a list of expressions from the pre-listening activity. Students also try to remember which words they heard that are related to their answers for exercise F.

Post-Listening (12-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students in 3 groups play Cranium in Class game. Miming, drawing or verbally describing randomly chosen phrases used in the listening track. Each person gets 60 seconds to demonstrate the word they have. If they want to double their score, they can choose a card from the question bank to answer it.
