Main Aims

  • To provide writing practice in the context of a restaurant review

Subsidiary Aims

  • To learn and use descriptive terms for food, location and atmosphere.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show slide with people eating in a restaurant. Ask questions: 1. How do you decide which restaurant you want to eat at? 2. Have you ever read restaurant reviews online? 3. What do you look for in a restaurant review?

Sample (3-4 minutes) • To provide a model of a restaurant review through reading

Ss will quickly read the following review and decide how many stars it should have (put in chat). I was really excited about eating at the Spicy Kitchen, but it was very disappointing. The location's great and the atmosphere's very cool and modern. The food's tasty, but it isn't good value because the portions are tiny! We weren't happy with the service because we waited a long time for the food. So, all in all, we aren't planning to go back!

Content preperations (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with the opportunity to understand the elements of a restaurant review

Ss will then be asked what topics the review discussed. The goal of the discussion will be generating the following list (with definitions and CCQs) Overall opinion -- a thought or belief about something or someone: Is it true? No Is it the same for everyone? No Atmosphere -- A feeling that exists in a place or situation Is it what you breathe? No Is it how it feels? Yes If time, students will be asked to complete a google form matching sentences to different parts of the review.

Writing preparation (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for their restaurant review

Students will be given a wordwall activity to sort adjectives describing food, atmosphere and service. Answers will be discussed, along with definitions as needed. Students will be encouraged to make notes of words they want to use in their reviews. Food: tasty, delicious, bland, spicy, salty Atmosphere: formal, romantic, cool, modern, traditional Service: Slow, fast, friendly, rude If there is time, students will be asked to complete a second wordwall activity sorting language for Overall Opinion and Recommendation. BAD: Disappointing. Terrible, I won't go back MEDIUM: So-so, okay, Not my favorite, average GOOD: Fantastic, excellent, impressive, I highly recommend it Each student will be given a page to write the words they want to use in their review

Productive Task(s) (12-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students will write their restaurant reviews on provided slides. T will communicate with students as they write via chat.

Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Students will be asked to provide feedback on one another's reviews. Specifically, they will be asked to answer the following questions: What words did they use to talk about the atmosphere? What words did they use to talk about the food? What words did they use to talk about the service? At the end of the lesson, T will provided Delayed Error Correction
