Teaching practice 6 Main aim: Lexis
Beginner level

Description

In this lesson students will be tested on their knowledge of who, what, when, where, why and how. The lesson with begin with a PowerPoint slide filled with the question words and asked to tell what they know about them. The students will then be given their first test to diagnose their ability on the subject. The test will be a quiz competition, containing eight questions missing the question word and offering a multiple choice answer. The first student to correctly fill in the question word and choose the right answer will win. After students have completed the test, I will address meaning, form and pronunciation, eliciting knowledge from the students and clarifying the aspects they are unsure of. This will then prepare students for the second test, provided them with a mix of controlled and freer oral practice. The test will again consist of a number of questions missing the question word that students must input. Followed by some freer practice of working in pairs; asking and answering the questions.

Materials

Abc Test 1 (Quiz)
Abc Group A & B WH word questions

Main Aims

  • To provide a review of WH question words in the context of asking general questions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of asking questions.

Procedure

Lead in (2-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the subject of the lesson.

The lesson will begin with a PowerPoint slide containing all of the WH question words in a range of colours, from here I will elicit as much as I can from the students concerning their knowledge of the subject. This is to activate their knowledge and generate interest in their next task.

First test (diagnostic) (10-15 minutes) • To test the Ss current knowledge of and ability to use the language and identify what the issues are

The first test will be a competitive quiz that students must race to complete. There will be eight questions all missing their WH question words that students must correctly add in. The questions will be multiple choice with three possible answers for each question. The first students to complete all correctly will be the winner.

Teach (clarifying) (8-12 minutes) • To clarify issues that the learners have will meaning, form and pronunciation

First Ss will be asked to check their answers in pairs. During my monitoring of the previous task I kept a close eye on some of the specific problems of the students. In this stage I will be addressing any problems and going over the meaning, form and pronunciation of the WH question words with the help of the learners. I expect to have to spend the most time on pronunciation however I will spend adequate time to go through all bases to ensure students and confident and capable to complete the second test.

Second test (Controlled and freer practice) (12-16 minutes) • To provide controlled and freer oral practice focused on using the language accuratley

In the final stage there will be two sets of questions, the class will be split into blues and reds. Reds will be given one set of questions and blues the other, again they must first input the correct WH question word, followed by constructing two of their own questions. After doing this, Ss will work in pairs asking and answering the provided questions and each others questions. While students complete their oral practice I will be monitoring the group correcting errors where I see or hear them, and checking their progress. If there are any reoccurring issues I will raise them will a short WCFB.
