Description

In this lesson, students learn about present continuous and be going to for future through a text based lesson about future plans. The lesson starts with a brief oral discussion about touristic destinations in London (Tate Modern, Covent Garden, Brick’s Lane, National Gallery and King's Head). This is followed by gist text work activity where students match information based on each tourisitc destination from London mentioned in an audio. Afterwards, students are given fragments of the audio script and they work in pairs to underline target structures. Then, meaning, form and pronunciation will be covered with concept checking question as required. Further, they will complete some controlled practice exercises. Finally, they will have an oral freer practice before a short delayed error correction section.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about prices of touristic activities in London

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students match illustrations of the next touristic attractions with their respective names (King’s Head, Covent Garden, Brick’s Lane, National Gallery, Tate Modern)

Text work (gist) (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students match information about prices with respective touristic destinations in London in a google forms document. Information is checked and clarified if required.

Text work (Intensive) (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students work in pairs in google slides to identify target structures based on audio-script fragments as demonstrated. Answers are checked orally.

Language analysis (8-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Students answer to concept checking questions, analyse tenses based on timelines. Are we referring to present or future? Future Is this structure in present or future? Present Is this about a plan? Yes

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students answer to multiple choice items based on illustrations and structures covered in language analysis stage. Answers and clarifications are confirmed

Free Practice (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students discuss (real or unreal) future plans in a touristic destination of their preference as they monitor their target language use
