Procedure (36-45 minutes)
Share Google Slide For lead in. Ask students to choose their Slide 2 shows a picture of a beach, watching a movie in a park, a hospital waiting room, and bank line. Ask Ss which place they would prefer to go. (and why?) Slide 3 is an open question. (What places would you like to go?) Have students talk about places and ask their opinions. What is it like there? Why do you like it? Do you think i should go there? Who else would you recommend it to? Slide 4 Tell the students that they are going to write an online review. It is a review of a local cafe. Have students reads sections of the review. CCQs. Do I like this place? What do I like about it? Point to the words in bold and ask CCQs. What is the title of the Review? (A Lovely Weekend Cafe) What is the place I wrote the review about? (Sunday Blooms Cafe) What is the reason I gave for liking the cafe? What is one thing I like about the cafe? (The staff, it is clean, it is cozy). What is one problem? (It is really crowded) Does that mean there are a few people or many people? (many people) Who do I think should go there? (people who like calm and beautiful places). The word "quite" is a useful word however it is often confused with similar words like quit and quiet. Slide 5 Clarification on quite, quiet and quit. CCQs Quite: If something is quite good is it a little good? (yes) Is it very good? (no) Is quite a strong modifier or soft modifier? (soft) Quiet: If the place is quiet, is it loud? (no) Do you hear a lot of noise? (no) Quit: When using the sentence: "He quit smoking". Does he smoke now? (no) Did he smoke before? (yes) Did he stop? (yes) Slide 6 - 8. Intensifiers for adjectives. The slide shows how the words, "quite, very, and really" add strength to the description. The slides show a comparison of the three intensifiers with the adjectives, cozy, friendly and crowded. Which one is the strongest: quite or really? (really) If the place is really crowded, is that strong or soft? (strong).
Teacher explains that we are going to do a short exercise with Word Wall. The Ss are to drag and drop the words on the top line to the correct definitions. ICQ What are you going to match? (The phrases to the definitions) The Ss have 2 minutes. The students are to match the keywords and definitions. I like this place... (General Opinion) One thing I love is... (Main Point 1: what you like about it) One problem is... (Main Point 2: Something you don't like) I recommend this place for... (who it's good for) It is very friendly... (Medium strength intensifier + adjective) It is really crowded... ( Strong intensifier + adjective) It is quite cozy... (soft intensifier + adjective) because... (connecting word to the reason for the opinion) OCFB
TP7 Slide 1 It is a slide of a place I like. (Sunday Blooms Cafe) Slide 2 shows a simple layout of an online review for the Sunday Blooms Cafe - Title - Introduction – what the place is + your general opinion - Main points – good things + problems (with reasons) - Recommendation – who it’s good for / whether you recommend it - Rating (optional) Have students read a review of Sunday Blooms Cafe. Show the slide that follows the format alongside the review. CCQs: What is the structure of the review? (Title, Introduction, main points, recommendation, review) What do we need to include in the introduction? (my opinion) What goes in the main points? (good things + problems and reasons) What goes in the recommendation? (who it is good for and reasons) Is the rating optional? (yes) Slide 3 This is q quick review of intensifiers. What is a soft intensifier? (quite) What is a medium intensifier? (very) What is a strong intensifier? (really) Note: We can add emphasis when we repeat the word or emphasize it. Slide 4. Ask the students to consider the following questions. Where is a place you enjoy going? (cafe, park, beach, mall etc..) What is a reason you like it? What is one problem with it? Who do you recommend would go there? T shares the link and confirm they have access to the Google slides and resends the link if necessary. Slide 5 - 8 Teacher explains the assignment to prepare for writing the online review. The students are to fill in the 5 blanks. 1. Choose a place to review. 2. What is the title of your review? 3. What is one good thing about the place? 4. What is one problem? 5. Who would you recommend it to. (and why) ICQ Q1. Are you choosing any place you want, or am I choosing the place for you?”(I choose.) Q2. Are you writing the full paragraph or just the title. (the title) Q3. Do you write one good thing or many good things? (one good thing) Q4. Is this a positive or negative thing you are going to write? (a negative thing) Q5. Do you say who it is good for? (yes) Do you need to give a reason? (yes) OCFB Give 4 minutes to assemble the answers for themselves.
Teacher tells Ss they will now write their online review. T assigns each student a numbered slide containing the task and a blank text box for them to work on. The Ss have 8 minutes to write their Review. Explain the task while showing the first Productive task slide. (Slides 10 - 13) 1. The review will be about 50 to 60 words total. 2. Write a title. 3. Write paragraphs 1-3 4. Add number of starts out of 5 if they wish. Criteria. Write a title for your review. Paragraph 1 — Introduction and Opinion (Write 1–2 sentences) Paragraph 2 — 1 Good Point and 1 problem (Write 2 sentences) Paragraph 3— Recommendation (Write 1 sentence) 4. Rating out of five stars (Optional) ICQs How many words do you need to write? (50-60 words) How long do you have? (9 min) What is the first thing you will write? (the title) How many paragraphs? (3 paragraphs) Do you have to put a rating in stars? (no, only if you want to).
T tells them that they need to give their FB to their partner when they finish. T assigns the pairs and puts them in BOR and Ss do task. T monitors and writes down common errors and mistakes for DEC. The students have 4 minutes. Put a checklist in the chat: 1. Does the review have a title? 2. Does the introduction tell what the place is? 3. Did the writer give their opinion on that place? 3. Does is include at least one good thing and one problem? 4. Did the writer give reasons? 5. Does the writer tell who would like to go to this place? 6. Are there any spelling mistakes? 7. Do the sentences begin with a capital letter? DEC 4 minutes
