Description

The context of the lesson is the biography of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Reading as the main aim and Speaking as the sub-aim. Gist reading and detailed reading tasks are provided, as well as vocabulary exercise.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading on the text about "The Many Faces of Arnold Schwarzenegger".

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency in expressing opinions or ideas about being a celebrity and getting involved into politics.

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in reading provided the context of celebrities in politics.

-Teacher shows pictures of different celebrities and politicians. -T asks who they are through whole class feedback. -T provides questions for discussion. -Students are paired to talk about these personalities. Using the following sentences as a guide: Questions: 1. Do you know any celebrity who have been involved in politics? 2. Do you think celebrities should be involved in politics? -Students are given 2 minutes to talk about it. -WCFB follows.

Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To provide a transition from warmer which will lead the students to the reading context.

-T shows a picture of a celebrity who became a politician. That's Arnold Schwarzenegger! -With their partners, students will talk about what they know about his life using the following words as a guide : Exercise 1 Straight Forward Student's Book family education sports films politics future plans

Pre-Reading Tasks (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text by pre-teaching the vocabulary.

-T elicit the meaning of the following words from students. -T writes bodybuilder on the board. -T asks one student who has great interest in this topic to share his thoughts. vocabulary also includes: embodiment stable relationship no money to his name made right contacts playboy image

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with gist reading and detailed reading tasks on the given text.

-For gist reading, T uses the main words in Reading Exercise 1. -Students read the text and whole class feedback follows. -For detailed reading, the class uses the Reading exercise 3. Arranging the details in order by writing numbers 1-7. -Students need to work alone on this. -After 5 minutes, students will have peer checking. -T clarifies how did the students come up with the following answers. -T uses a timeline to show the sequence of events.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-15 minutes) • To provide practice of the language with fluency as the target through expressing their thoughts or opinion regarding the text.

-T makes 4 small groups. For a productive reading post reading task, the group needs to brainstorm about the following questions and come up with a decision. GROUP 1: Do you think a former actor could become president in your country? Why or Why not? GROUP 2: Would you rather be a celebrity or politician? Why? GROUP 3:Do celebrities have social responsibilities because of their fame? Why/How? *A vocabulary exercise is also added for further practice.
