Description

In this lesson students will increase the knowledge and understanding of lexis related to office supplies. Students will begin lesson with warm-up talking about working in offices. The lesson will begin with visuals related to office supplies. Students will work in pairs to identify different types of office supplies. Teacher will monitor which lexis they already know in this task. Students will play Kim's Game to develop memory and observation skills related to the lexis in the lesson. Students will be divided into 3 groups and 1 person from each group will take turns playing the game to remember which item has been taken off the table. Students will work in pairs to discuss questions about the desk as per exercise 2. Students to think of other questions to ask in discussion.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher to introduce topic of working in an office by giving a hand-out with 3 questions about the perfect job. What is your perfect job? Is it a job where you work outside or inside? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the job? Students will work in pairs to discuss these questions for 3-4 minutes. Teacher to monitor pair work and provide any assistance with vocabulary, etc. After students discussion, teacher to ask how many people want to work outside and inside? Some students may say both. Teacher to transition into next stage by saying let's imagine part of a job means we work at a desk.

Vocabulary Test #1 and Diagnostics (8-10 minutes) • To test students' prior knowledge of the target lexis and ability to use the language and identify which words need clarification

Teacher to use powerpoint to bring up a the desk image and elicit what the students are going to talk about today. The image says Paperwork, has lexis in the bottom left hand corner with items numbered in the picture. Students to say find the items in the picture. There are 18 words to be checked for clarification of knowledge. Teacher to say please find items numbered in picture. Teacher to walk around with notepad taking notes of which words students know and which ones they are unsure about or don't know. Students to work in pairs to match the words to the items. Students to check answers with their partner.

Teach (clarifying) and Feedback (13-16 minutes) • To clarify issues learners had with meaning, form and pronunciation so learners understand it better, know how to pronounce it better and know how to construct it better

Teacher to ask students what was I doing while you were doing the exercise. Teacher to elicit walking around, monitoring, checking, writing on the notepad. Teacher to give feedback. Teacher to say I noticed you worked well and I noticed a lot of them were correct but some need to be checked. I noticed the items.... (based on diagnostics) Teacher to use CCQ's to check meaning of lexis that needs clarification. ie. Biro. Do we use a biro to write with? Yes. Does it have ink? Yes. Teacher to show a real biro. Teacher will do this for all that needs checking. Teacher to check pronunciation for all words as this will be a good exercise to clarify pronunciation issues. Teacher to write the words on the board and repeat and drill.

Test #2 Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target lexis again and compare with the first test

Teacher to practice lexis understanding and clarification with the Kim's game activity. Kim's game develops a person's capacity to observe and remember details. In this case teacher to set-up game by dividing class into 3 groups, Galatasaray, Fenerbahce and Besiktas. Teacher to set-up game by placing lexis items on a table. Teacher to ask students the names of the items for clarification. Teacher to set-up activity by saying one student from each team will come to the table. Teacher will ask students to cover their eyes with their hands so they can't see the table and the items. Teacher to remove one item from table and ask students to open their eyes and say the name of the item which is missing. First student to say the word correctly gets a point for their team. Other students to decide who said the correct item first. Students to take turns playing the game. If the game is too easy then teacher to remove 2 items for each round of the game. Teacher to move the items around on the table to make the game more interesting and to test the students if they remember the lexis.

Free practice and Speaking (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target lexis

Teacher to provide hand-out with discussion questions. There are 4 questions in the H/O. Students to work in pairs to discuss these questions. Teacher to change partners for this exercise. Students to talk about what their own desk looks like in this discussion to provide freer practice of lexis and to practice fluency.
