Description

In this lesson students increase their listening skills -which is targeted a phone conversation- in the context of ordering office supplies. Also they will learn some vocabulary which is related to office life and they will have a chance to have skim and detailed listening. The lesson will end with writing an e-mail to order supplies.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher projects a ppt page on the WB and show 2 pictures to the students. The first one is a young man's picture and the other one is a young lady's picture. Their names are also there, underneath the picture: Dave and Pipa. Teacher wants students to guess these people's job in a company. After getting the answers teacher tells students that these people are working in the same company but in the different departments. Dave works for IT department and Pipa works in the stationery department.

Pre-Listening (8-10 minutes) • Eliciting vocabulary to prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher projects visuals for the following vocabulary. Students will see the pictures and the vocabulary on the WB but both information will be separated. Students will work together (in pairs) and thy to match the vocabulary with the pictures Stationery - Maternity Leave - payment - cutback- a dozen- bankrupt- As feed back, teacher will project the correct answers on the WB and also phonemic info for the words as well as the stress.

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

Teacher tells students that they will listen to a phone conversation between Dave and Pipa about ordering stationery. (Straight Forward, Intermediate, pg. 141) Teacher explain students that in this conversation Dave will have some problems. Some of these problems are listed on the work sheet. I want you to listen to this conversation to check any of these problems listed true or not. ICQs: What will we listen to? (Phone conversation) About what? (Ordering stationery) What will we do with our task? (We will find Dave's problems) Teacher gives 30 second to the students to read the questions before the audio starts. After the audio stops teacher asks students to check their answers in pairs. Teacher puts the correct answers (projects) on the WB and WC check their answers.

While-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Teacher tells students that they will listen to the conversation one more time and this time they will complete an order form. Teacher shows the form to the students and asks them to listen to Dave's orders and Pipa's answers and the final order quantitiy. Teacher starts the conversation from the middle which the orders started to taken. After the task students check the answers in pairs. Teacher projects the form to the WB and students come to the WB and fill the blanks.

While-Listening #3 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Teacher tells students that they will listen to the audio one more time. This time they will have the tape script but some parts will be missing. Teacher asks students to listen to the audio for the missing parts and put the correct information on the script. After they are done students pair check their answers and they see the whole text.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher shows students an email sample that includes order from stationery department. Teacher elicit the function "The person whom it may concern" by CCQs. Is someone going to read this e-mail? (Yes) Did I put a name? (No) Is it formal? (Yes) Do I know this person? (No) Teacher asks student to pretend like an worker in a company and write an e-mail to the stationery department to order some stationery. During the task teacher monitors the students and take notes about the common mistakes. After the task students share their e-mails with the class and teacher gives the WC feedback about the common mistakes.
