Description

In this lesson, Ss learn how to write a short email to a friend where they can be persuasive to convince them to visit them in another country. During the process, they develop the skills of organize the ideas in paragraphs and use of persuasive language.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing a short email (40-50 words) inviting friends (in another country) to visit you

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop students' awareness of mail structure
  • To provide clarification and practice of useful expressions to persuade a friend to accept the invitation to visit to another country.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To activate schema and personalize the topic

1.- Teacher sets time for stage (5 min) 2.- T shares screen showing the slide with 2 questions: “Think of your best friend… Have you ever invited them to visit you? What happened?” “What’s the most exciting invitation you’ve ever sent or received?” 3.-T indicate: "You will discuss in pairs in breakout rooms for 3 min this questions, and you will answer by pairs, in the slide with your name" 4.- T assign a slide with their pair name and shares link in the chat box. PW- 3 min 5.- OCFB

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

1.- Set time for stage (8 min) 2.- Share screen in Google Slide with jumbled email sentences, and shares the link in the chat box 3.- Say: “Work with your partner. Put the email in the correct order and Match each part of the email. Greeting Reason Invitation Plans/Details Closing, "You have 5 min in Break out Rooms, please use the slide with your name, The link is in the chat box” 4.- ICQs Nominate a SS “Are you writing or reading?” reading “Are you ordering the paragraphs or are you listening to?” Ordering paragraphs 5.- Share link to slides in the chat box PW – 5 min- T share screen the timer 6.- T monitors and supports 7.- T Conduct OCFB: check correct order quickly eliciting from other students. MODELING EMAIL 1.- Set time (4 min) 2.- Show model email organized 3.- Say: “Read quickly. Don’t worry about every word.” 4.- T sets task: “Underline the invitation phrase and 2 activities. Individual, use the slide with your name. You have 2 min” IW –2 min- Teacher screen share timer 5.- Pair check answers in Break out rooms- If not possible BR ("Text a private message to your partner to compare answers, you have 1 min") PW – 1 min 6.- Conduct OCFB

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

1.- Set time (7 min) 2.- Show same email 3.- Say: “Fill the gap with the phrases in the word bank" 4.- ICQ: “Are you writing or finding?” → Writing PW – 4 min 6.- Monitor and support 7.- Conduct OCFB 8.- Show useful language box 9.- Say: “Choose 2 phrases you can use in this email for persuading”

Productive Task(s) (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

1.- Set time (12 min) 2.- Show instructions on slide 3.- Say: “Write a 40–50 word email to invite a friend to visit you.” 4.- T clarify: "Write by paragraphs each stage of an email including 2 activities proposed, You have 8 min" 6.- ICQs: “How many words?” → 40–50 “Do you include activities?” → Yes 7.- Share slide link IW – 10 min 8.- Monitor and support

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

1.- Set time (4 min) 2.- Show checklist table 3.- Say: “Read your partner’s email and check the boxes you have 4 min.” 4.- Model one example quickly 5.- Put students in breakout rooms PW – 4 min 6.- Monitor Stage: Feedback & Error Correction (3–4 min) 1.- Set time (3–4 min) 2.- Show 2 incorrect sentences EX: “I invite you come Montreal” “We can to go Niagara” 3.- Say: “Lets work together. Can you help me correcting the sentences?.” 4.- Conduct OCFB and confirm answers of all students
