Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about changing lives of kids in Uganda through charity in the context of an interview.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of changing lives.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in / Pre Listening (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the topic

T show the Ss the picture on Pg 18 and ask them : What do you see in the pictures? Who are the people? Where were the pictures taken? What does the title tell you? What do you think is the story about? Ss work in groups and talk about it. T elicits a couple ideas and writes on the board. Also T clarifies any language necessary in the text. Charity, to raise money, fix, mechanic, etc. T assigns the easy listening task to the Ss. Ss listen to the text ( the interview with Jane) to get the gist of the story- part 1. Ex. 1b Ss check with their peers and w/c feedback. Clarify any vocabulary if necessary.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T assigns the easy listening task to the Ss. Ss listen to the text ( the interview with Jane) to get the gist of the story- part 1. Ex. 1b Ss listen and find the answers. They check with their peers and w/c feedback. Clarify any vocabulary if necessary.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and detailed information listening task

Ex 1c T gives the Listening Task 2 (Ex. 1c) to the Ss to get some more details of the story. Ss look at the questions and listen to the text again. They check their answers with their pairs and w/c FB about the content. Quick reordering of the story.

Task #2 - While Listening (10-12 minutes) • To improve students' listening for detailed and specific information skills

Ss are assigned the detailed listening task Ex. 1d on pg.18, English File Ss Bk. They listen and do the exercise while listening, check with their peers and whole class feedback. T monitors, helps with language if necessary, notes down errors/good language for delayed language feedback. Ss listen again to check if necessary. T gets feedback on the content of the text from the Ss for a couple minutes before the production stage.

Post Listening - Production (8-10 minutes) • To practice their speaking skills and provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss have a few minutes to write down their ideas about the topics: Do you think changing lives is important? Why? Would you want to be a part of a charity organization? Which one? If you were rich, who would you want to help? Why? And then they discuss their opinions in groups.
