Abc Pictures prediction - Ex.2b
Abc Listening: what's in the news? - Ex.3a
Abc Listening 2 - for details. Ex.3b
Abc Realia/newspaper

Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice and for detail using a text about news from the world in the context of TV news stories.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of new vocabulary in the context of real world events

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in: realia for prediction. (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The lesson will start with a warm-up provided by a realia: I will bring a newspaper to the class and ask the students what is it and elicit the word newspaper; then, I will write it on the board and focus on the 2 words that compose newspaper. In such way, the word news will come out and set the topic (activation). After a few clarifications of the word, SS will be encouraged to answer to a few questions about news in their daily lives, in pairs. If some interesting new vocabulary is coming out, it will be written on the board.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will pre-teach flood, plane crash lottery and climb as potential blocking vocabulary. (the other vocabulary is going to be listened first twice, then as a post-listening activity it will be clarified as my submit is lexis) If SS find lexis too hard to understand, they will be showed 4 photos (projected on the board) and asked to guess if the words learned before may be matched to them or not. 1 minute of sharing opinions with their partners with motivations.

While Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

SS will listen once to a short TV news extract reporting news from different countries. They will skim reading in order to put the photos in order as they hear some characteristics concerning them. (the same 4 pictures they will have looked at before). Time limit of 1 minute maximum of discussion. (to check if predictions were true and compare with peers their level of understanding) Feedback with the teacher of exercise + overview idea of the content.

While-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

SS will listen to the recording a second time: this time, they're asked to look for details and select the correct answers of ex.3b. If necessary, they will be able to listen for a third time if most of the class needs clarifications. Then whole class feedback, clarifications and answers on the board. (this stage will be perfect to check their level of awareness and ability to skim and scan listening to gather information).

Post-Listening + Focus on meaning, form and pronunciation of new lexis. (8-9 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will stick some pictures on the board and divide SS into 2 or 3 groups (according to their number) and I'll hand them out some strips of paper on which to find some definitions of some lexis found in the text. They will be asked to read and share their opinions and stick the definitions near the correct photo. (instructions as follows: you have 9 definitions and 9 pictures, work together to find the right match, stand up and stick the answer near the pictures - it's a competition!) They will have 4 minutes and then I will check the results, give them the correct lexis and focus on MFP of it.

Speaking practice (3-5 minutes) • to develop oral fluency on the topic

If time allows, this activity is an optional one and will provide an opportunity to personalize the topic. SS are asked labeled and repaired and they will ask to each other: -what is their favourite way to know about the news (radio, tv, internet) and what is more important for you to read. Speaking for fluency for 3 minutes.
