Main Aims

  • To consolidate students' control of Passive Voice, including formal reporting structures used in news and official communication, as well as the major and common verb tenses.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice impersonal passive structures.
  • To resolve common doubts and correct recurring passive voice errors.
  • To help students recognize form and function of each tense in context.
  • To reinforce understanding of tense contrast (especially between past forms and perfect tenses).

Procedure

Activation (25-30 minutes) • Let the students wake up and start the day with more energy and enthusiasm.

Divide class into 2 teams. Write a list of 12 base-form verbs on the board. Each team lines up. One student at a time runs to the board and writes the past participle form of one verb. Run back and tag the next person. After all verbs are filled, go through and check as a class.

Vocabulary: It is said that, It is believed that, It is expected that, It is reported that, It is alleged that, He/She is said to, He/She is believed to, He/She is thought to, to be responsible for, to be linked to. -Model each phrase with one clear example. -Students repeat and underline the passive structure. -Quick clarification if needed.

Production (23-25 minutes) • Use passive confidently in formal reporting.

In pairs, students prepare an "official update" about a situation (choose one): -a service issue (fees, appointment, policy) -a community news item (neutral) -a workplace announcement Requirements: -at least 6 passive sentences -at least 2 impersonal passive -at least 1 personal reporting (He/They is/are believed to) Present in front of the class.

Major Review (45-50 minutes) • To review and solidify their English knowledge.

Ask the students all their grammar doubts. Review and compare all the major tenses. Ask them to produce sentences. Work as much as needed in their doubts.
