Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of reported speech in the context of family reunion.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed and deduction reading practice using a text about a true story in the context of family reunion.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will watch and react to an eighty-second news video extract about two brothers reuniting after spending 50 years apart. Stimulate them with some questions: "What was the video about? How did the people in the video feel? Why?" This will expose them to the context of the following story/reading passage.

Exposure to TL (10-12 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

Part 1: Do task 1 & 2 Explain to the ss that they are about to read a true story in the same context. Ask them to have a look at the questions before reading so that they would know exactly what they are looking for from the text. Elicit answers as feedback. Elicit ss' predictions about the rest of the story. Ask ss to work in pairs to order the sentences in activity 2. Monitor and help if needed. Ask the groups to exchange HOs to compare their answers. Whole class feedback. Part 2: Do activity Point out to the ss that the sentences are telling a story. Ask them to write the actual conversation (This can be done in pairs or in groups of three). Demo the task on WB using the first two sentences. Play audio for feedback.

Highlighting and clarification of TL (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

* Meaning: CCQs: - Is the conversation happening now? (No) - When did it happen then? (Sometime in the past) Write this sentence on WB: - Secretary: "He has a tattoo of an owl on his hand." Q: How can tell/report this sentence to someone else? (Ss' answers could be correct or not) * Form: Write this sentence on WB: - She said he had a tattoo of an owl on his hand. Elicit the form from the ss and assist them if needed. Write this sentence on WB: Harry:"Does he have a tattoo on his hand?" Elicit the reported form from ss and assist them if needed. * Pronunciation: Focus on the difference in intonation between the direct speech Q and the reported one.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give HO3. Explain to the ss that they will use the conversation and the story (part 2) to extract one example of direct speech for each tense in the table and its reported speech form. Demo & ICQ. Tell them that they can compare their answers with each other. Monitor. Elicit feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss do task 1a individually. Ask them to campare their answers and discuss the differences if there are any. Monitor. Give feedback by eliciting answers.

Free Practice: Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Show a picture of a famous Tunisian social TV programme. Ask ss to tell each other in pairs about a story they remember from this show. Ask them to try using the TL. Monitor for delayed feedback and assist if needed.
