Main Aims

  • • By the end of this lesson, students will have practiced the past simple of the regular verbs and reviewed the simple past of the irregular ones. They will also practice the different pronunciations of the "ed", so they will be able to pronounce the "ed" of the verb correctly.

Subsidiary Aims

  • • Enable Students to listen for specific details to find out the missing verbs, and fill in the gaps.

Procedure

Follow up (5-7 minutes) • Review with the students the past simple of the irregular verbs

The Ss will be asked to do an exercise on a hand out about irregular verbs. Ss work in pairs and do the exercise. Whole class correction.

Presentation (5-8 minutes) • Introduce the students to the simple past of the regular verbs.

Ss will listen to track 1. and they tick the activities Angie did yesterday from the list they have on exercise 1 p 72. Ss check their answers with their partners. whole class correction T writes three model sentences on the board to highlight the simple past in the sentences. 1- Yesterday, Angie stayed at home. 2- Yesterday, she watched TV. T uses the CCQs to check the students` understanding of the sentences. the form will be elicited from the students.

Practice (8-10 minutes) • Provide the students with enough practice of the regular verbs.

After the Ss go through the different ways to pronounce the ''ed'', they will do an oral practice using the verbs to repeat the activities Angie did on exercise 2 page 72. In exercise 3 p 72, they will use the activities on the list to talk about themselves and say what they did last Sunday. They work in pairs and try to tell each other about what they did. Whole class correction. Ss will listen to the second track 3. then they complete the conversation between Angie and Rick then they fill the gaps with the missing verbs. Play the recording again if necessary. Ss check their answers with their partners. Whole class correction. T writes two modal sentences on the board to highlight the interrogative and negative forms of the simple past. Elicit the form from the Ss.

Practice 2 (12-15 minutes) • Enable the students to use the different forms of the simple past of the regular and irregular verbs in the game "find someone who"

The Ss will be given the instructions of the activity "find someone who" then they will go around the class to fill in the table they have. A demo. or example should be done to clarify the task for the Ss. After they collect the information needed in the table then there will be a whole class feedback. Ss will fill in the grammar spot on page 73. Pair work. then whole class correction

Production (4-5 minutes) • Enable the students to use the target language to talk about their past activities

Ss do exercise 6 page 73 in pairs. change partners and ask him/ her about the activities he/she did last night. whole class correction.
