Procedure (33-43 minutes)
The class will begin with pictures of brothers and sisters, along with the questions: How are they alike? How are they different? Students will be asked to describe the ways they are similar and different. This will help them to discover ways of talking about differences.
Students will listen to an audio of two English speakers discussing ways they are different from and similar to their siblings. It will provide models of the three structures to be practiced during the lesson. After the lesson, students will offer the language they heard, which will be typed on the screen
Three structures for making comparisons will be introduced 1. Adjective + er 2. more/less + adjective + than 1. Model sentence from audio: She is younger, but she is taller... Meaning CCQs Who is older? Who is shorter? 2. Since we went travelling together, we became closer. Meaning CCQs Do they like each other? Yes Do they talk often? Yes Do they talk more now or before they travelled? Now 3. My older sister is the happiest. Form - Adjective + er table showing comparatives relative to unmodified adjectives and superlatives. adjective comparative superlative young younger youngest tall taller tallest thin thinner thinnest happy happier happiest Pronunciation: She’s YOUNGer, but she’s TALLer Students will volunteer other comparative adjectives, and they will be listed 2. Model sentences form audio: My sister is more mature than I am. She is less educated than me. Meaning CCQs Does my sister act like a child? Who acts older? Who has been to school the longest? Form: More/less + adjective + than Use with longer and less common adjectives. Pronunciation -- sentence stress She is MORE maTURE than I AM. She is LESS EDucated than ME. Students generate other adjectives to use with more/less than 3. We don’t look similar. Meaning: Adjective, Has many things the same, although not exactly the same. CCQs: Form Noun + verb + similar Pronunciation Similar SIM ə ler SIM ə ler WE don’t LOOK SIMilar.
Pairs of students will be put in BO rooms to discuss the following prompt: In pairs, discuss differences and similarities between you and your siblings Speaking Practice 1: Students will be given these model sentences to use: He is _____ -er than me. She is more _____ than I am. We ______ similar. After speaking practice 1, students will come back to main room and each student will report one similarity or difference that their partner said. (2 minutes) Speaking Practice 2: Students will be put with new partners with the same prompt but no model sentences. (4 minutes)
Content feedback -- Students will report one of their partner's similarity or difference. Language Feedback -- Correct and incorrect sentences from Language Practice 1 and 2 will be shared and discussed.
