Description

This is a speaking lesson whose intention is to provide Ss with opportunities to develop speaking skills and interact with new vocabulary. Students will learn to speak about preparing food for eating outdoors.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Share the screen of a google slide. The first slide is a close up picture of me with very red eyes. Lead in questions: 1. What is happening here? 2. Am I happy or sad? (No wrong answers and minimal clues) Show slide 2. It is the same picture a with a wider view of my whole face. I have a slightly strained look and I am wearing a toque. The background shows snow and trees. 1. Where do you think I am? (outside at a park in winter) 2. Is it warm or cold? (It is cold). 3. Am I sad because it is cold? Show Slide 3. It is a picture of a snow flake that landed on my lap. 1. What does this look like? (a star, a bit of dust) 2. What is this? (it is a snowflake on my leg) 2. Is the snowflake melting? (possibly yes. It is 3. Am I sad because the snow flake is melting? (no) Show slide 4. A collage of pictures of my daughter and I eating breakfast outside in the winter time. 1. Tell me about the pictures. (What do you see?) 2. Who are the people in the pictures? 3. What food is in the pictures? (bacon and eggs, toast in a frying pan, hot mugs of tea). I went with my daughter to cook breakfast outdoors in the winter.

Content Preparation (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Show slide 5-8. There are questions related to eating outside. . 1. Where are the different places you can eat outside? (a park, the beach, on the street).(In the mountains, In a botanical garden, In your backyard, On a hill with a view, At a campsite) 2. What foods would you eat outside? (sandwiches, fruit, snacks, drinks, BBQ food) 3. Why would you eat outside? (nice weather, fresh air, relaxing, fun with friends/family) 4. What are some problems with eating outside. insects, weather, no bathrooms, wind. I will show a recorded zoom interview with my daughter discussing our breakfast outside. Follow up questions: 1 .Where were we? (At the lake) 2. What did we eat? (Bacon, eggs, toast, tea) 3. What problems did we have with eating outside? (Smoke, snow, cold, no table).

Language Preparation (7-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will begin the Language preparation with: “Great — now you have lots of ideas. Before you talk about your own experiences, let’s look at some useful phrases you can use.” Share Google form TP5 Language Preparation. Section 1 The students are to match language chunks with meaning. Phrases 1. eat outside 2. cook together 3. really peaceful Meanings A. very quiet and relaxing B. prepare food with another person C. eat food outdoors (not inside) Section 2. The students will practice orally finishing the sentence with various endings. The teacher will model the first one and support the students in pronunciation with the remainder. Model sentence: “I prefer to eat ______” (outside) Various endings • at home • in a restaurant • with friends • in the park • at a BBQ

Productive Tasks Speaking (14-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will make the transition to the speaking stage with something like; “Great — now let’s use this language to talk about your own experiences. I’m putting some starter sentences in the chat to help you begin.” I will explain that I am going to put the students in break out rooms to do a finish the sentence exercise. I will review the first one with the students together. Each student must tell the other all the completed sentences and they switch. I will put the starter sentences in the chat. They will have 3 minutes. Starter Sentences: - My favourite place to eat outside is… - I like eating outside because… - I usually eat… - One problem with eating there is… - I prefer to eat outside/inside because… When the students come back together I will do a short review noting some of their answers. For the free practice I will explain that they are going to plan a perfect outdoor meal together. They will need to decide: - where to go - who they will invite - what to eat - why it’s a good place - what problems they might have - what they prefer I will put this the task in the chat. The students will have 7 minutes to discuss with their partners.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will monitor the conversations and comment briefly regarding what was said. will have monitored the free practice and I will look for two or three of the following: 2 good examples 2 errors 1 error that blocks meaning. We can discuss this with the class together for upgrades, questions and corrections.
