Description

In this lesson, practice their receptive skill (reading) including their gist and detailed sub-skills through the context of people who changed the world.At the same time and as a sub aim for the lesson, students learn the main collocations of everyday events through the same context.Students first are led in the topic of the text and are pre taught the blocking vocabulary using pictures. Then they complete two different tasks for the sake of prompting their receptive sub skills.Finally, students complete a productive activity followed by two activities aim at teaching collocations.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Nelson Mandela in the context of People who changed the world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of Collocations in the context of Everyday events

Procedure

Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To provide spoken fluency and to activate prior knowledge about the topic of the text

T shows pictures of Nelson, his country,the racial discrimination problem and a picture which reflects his struggle for the cause. T elicits from the students the context of the text.

Teach blocking vocabulary (2-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of key vocabulary items

T elicits and drills briefly the following words through presenting some pictures: university,married vs divorced, lawyer, president, prison.

While-Reading 1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide practice in reading for gist

T arranges the students into groups of three.Then students are given 5 minutes to work with groups to match six poctures with the six parts of the text and stick them on a piece of paper.Finally, students exchange their papers with the next group to check their answers. A WCFB.

While-Reading 2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading

T gives the students handouts including sentences taken from the text to put in the order in which they happened in the text. Pair check and then WCFB.

Post-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To expand on what they've learned

Students talk in pairs about another person who changed the world. T nominates some pairs to share.

Clarification (3-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of the sub aim which is collocations

T provides an example of a collocation by sticking two seperate slips of paper on the Wb .Then T sticks the rest but this time by leaving a gap in each collocation to be completed by the students. Students work in pairs to choose the correctslip of paper.WCFB.

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide practice for the sub aim

T provides the atudents with gap fill handouts to work in pairs and then a pair check followed by WCFB takes place.
