Description

The lesson aims to focus on the Past Simple to talk about the past and emphasize that these happened already to be able to use it in their speaking practices. This will also cover the rules on forming irregular and regular verbs.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification on Past Simple which includes the regular and regular verbs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy in using Past Simple in telling past events.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in getting familiar with the Past Simple verbs used in the previous text.

T asks about who was the person they talked about in the previous lesson. T again shows the picture of Nelson Mandela and asks what they can remember about him based on the text. T group the class into 2. Each group will have set of words to be arranged according to the life of Nelson Mandela. Ex. in 1938. studied university He prison. went He to lived He in Johannesburg. law. He studied

Highlight (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through highlighting the Past Simple regular and irregular verbs in positive sentences.

T takes the verbs from the sentences each group has arranged. Verbs like lived,started, studied and went. T focus the students on the following verbs. T eliminates the -d and show that lived is the past simple form of live, started is the past simple form of start; studied is the past simple form of study and went is the past simple of go. T ask the Ss to take their text about Mandela from the previous lesson and alone/ by themselves find the Simple Past of the verbs in exercise 4a. After 2 minutes, the Ss will work in pair to complete the table. T listens to the pair, monitor if each of them were able to help the other in finding out how it happened.

Useful Language/ Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify use of Past Simple regular and irregular verbs for coming productive tasks.

T shows how the answers were obtain. T emphasize the rules going over one at a time on the given words because it is important that the Ss understand this so they can use the rules for their speaking exercise. T plays recording 6.6 to clarify the different sound of "d" in Past Simple regular verbs. A short and quick drills follows. T plays recording 6.7 to practice the irregular verbs. Again, together we practice those words from exercise 4a. T pair the students up and plays the recording again but this time practice the words together.

Productive Task(s) (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice the regular and irregular verbs in speaking

T uses the same pair. They will talk about the things they did yesterday. Just say 2 sentences. T gives the examples: 1. I went to McDonalds. 2. I watched the news. After 2 minutes, T will call them to share their sentences in class.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

For this part, I will just do a wrap up. By answering, exercise 4b. T shows the chart of irregular verbs and points out that this needs constant practice.
