In this lesson, students develop their reading for gist and reading for detail skills through the topic of fears and phobias; their causes and treatments, as well as, examining the adjective building.


Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detail reading practice using a text about Fear and Phobia in the context of whether a phobia is genetic or learnt.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of positive and negative adjective formation.


Warmer (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and predict what the kind of content they are likely to read

T shows the picture of the car after the car accident and will share his own story that happened with his family. He will tell that after the car accident he has suffered from car anxiety or post-traumatic stress. He will ask students what types of anxiety or phobias do they know. Do you know anyone who is very frightened of something, even though there is no logical reason for that fear? What are they frightened of? Imagine that you are terrified of crowds. How would that affect your life? What other fears could dramatically change your life?

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • to engage interest to the topic

Ss try to answer the questions in reading exercise 1. T will explain some blocking vocabulary before the task. For example, T will write word hereditary on WB.

Gist-Reading (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with a gist task in order to get the general idea of the reading content

St continue working on the reading task 1, but this time T will provide a text. After the task students will check their answer and T will provide the correct answers.

Detail reading (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with more detailed reading task in order to pick out specific information

Students will work on task 2 and match the questions in exercise 1 to the answers. Teacher will monitor the process and ask students to compare their answers. Teacher will show correct answer and justifies the answers.

Post-Reading Task (4-5 minutes) • To ensure that students understood the text

T gives HO with exercise 3. Students need to complete the text with the phrases a-g in the gaps 1-7. After that students will check answers with their partner.

Focus on vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • to analyze the adjective building

St will do vocabulary exercise 1. Teacher will give HO, students need to complete the table with words from the text. After finishing the task teacher provides correct answers by projecting it on WB.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • to ensure that students understood the word building

T will give HO and students work individually on vocabulary task 2. Students need to complete the sentences with a word from previous exercise. Students will share their answers with their partner. After that teacher will show the correct answer.

Freer Practice (4-5 minutes) • to check if students are able to use vocabulary and produce written sample

T gives handouts and explains the task. Students need to replace the phrases in italics in exercise 2 so that they are true for them. Then compare answers in pairs.
