Procedure (110-120 minutes)
Ask fun or absurd "What if...?" questions to review third conditional in a low-stress way Example prompts: "What if you had missed the bus this morning?" "What if you had been born with a tail?" Students respond using full third conditional sentences "If I had missed the bus, I would have arrived late."
On the board write the rule: Earlier past = had + V3. Students complete 4 quick timeline prompts (teacher writes two events; students write 1 correct sentence using by the time / when). Teacher confirms answers and fixes 2 common errors (missing had, wrong V3).
On the board write the form: If + had + V3, would have + V3. Students transform 4 "real past facts" into Third Conditional regrets. Example: "We arrived late." - "If we had arrived earlier, we would have..." Teacher elicits 2 answers and highlights: had vs would have.
Draw a simple table on board: Type Meaning Form Mixed 1 past - present If had V3 - would + base Mixed 2 present - past If Past Simple - would have V3 Students do 6 quick "label + complete" items (teacher writes a cue and students label NOW result or PAST result, then complete the sentence). Whole-class feedback.
Part 1 (Past Perfect): choose/complete; timeline-based Part 2 (Third Conditional): complete + rewrite Part 3 (Mixed 1 & 2): choose type + complete Part 4 (Production): a paragraph using one of each (PP, Third, Mixed 1, Mixed 2) Monitor quietly; 10 and 5-minute warning; collect.
