Description

In this lesson students learn about the vocabulary and idioms In this lesson the students will increase their understanding of different ways to express vocabulary and idioms related to lottery. The lesson will begin with pictures. Students will discuss the topic of lottery through a matching activity. The activity has pictures of a boy and a girl talking together. Students will work in pairs to match the sentences and responses. There will be an answer key on the walls around the classroom which students will check at the end of the task. Teacher will elicit the meaning of some idioms through pictures.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher is going to set a matching activity about simpler idioms. I am going to give Ss a handout and ask them to work in groups and discuss their answers.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I am going to write the names of famous Turkish football teams ( Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray, Bursaspor) and ask Ss to work in groups to talk and discuss opportunities of winning for each of the teams in the finals. T. asks Ss about the odds of each team winning. Ss rank the teams based on opportunity of winning. T. introduces the words odds, gamble and stake through pictures and asks Ss to use them in sentences.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will ask Ss if they know anything about the lottery and risks of losing money.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss will now be asked to carefully read Ex 1 in pairs and choose the correct answers. There will be 3 answer keys on the walls around the classroom where students can check their answers. Then I will deal with any questions with the whole class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

SS work in groups to do Ex 2. Ss work in pairs to discuss the questions below. What are the risks involved in the following situations? a) asking you boss for a pay rise. b) playing the lottery c) walking home alone in the dark Do you usually play it safe or do you like to try your luck? What was the last big risk that you took?
