Description

In this lesson the students are going to extend the area of their vocabulary based on a reading text alongside with being more familiar with reading skills such as reading for gist and reading for specific information.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give students practice in the integrated skills of reading for gist and speaking fluency in the context of worst case scenarios

Subsidiary Aims

  • to introduce related vocabulaty

Procedure

warm-up (2-3 minutes) • to create interest and enthusiasm positively towards the new lesson

Engage students by asking them what they can see in each picture on pages 62 and 63.

Lead in (2-4 minutes) • to draw students' attentions positively towards the new lesson

T gives them a handout and have them match the words and definition to preteach the words. the teacher puts students in pairs and asks them to read the titles then answer the questions. T tells them not to read the text yet.

presentation (4-5 minutes) • to present some new vocabulary

In pairs get students to write a list for each situation. T emphasises that they must not read the text yet.

scaning (7-8 minutes) • to find answers to the questions

T gives time to read the text and asks then to discuss the questions. T monitors and helps if necessary.

controlled practice (6-8 minutes) • to have students practice the vocabulary

T puts ss in pairs to try to guess the meaning of the words in exercise 4.Go through the answers as a class.

Freer practice/ Speaking (6-7 minutes) • the students practice speaking based on answering some questions

Teacher puts students in pairs and asks them to answer as many questions as they can. then T asks ss to read the text again to check their answers. T monitors and helps if necessary.

wrap up (9-10 minutes) • SS practice speaking based on what they have learned

T puts students in groups and tells them to discuss the questions in exercise 6. Finaly elicit answers from each group for the questions.
