Week 2 Renting a Flat (how much / how many)

Description

The context of the lesson is the correct use of how much and how many. This plan focuses on the grammar part which includes the countable and uncountable nouns. Vocabulary on different things in the house provides a good example in identifying the nouns. Exercises and practices guide the students to better understand the lesson.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of on the proper use of how much and how many in the context of renting a flat.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of things in the house to be used as examples in identifying countable and uncountable nouns.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context about renting a flat.

T counts 1,2 and divide the group first so as they will not be fixed sitting with their friends. T asks questions and connect the new lesson with the previous which is about places. But this time focus only on the picture of house or flat. T shows a picture of a house. T say "this is my house and in this house I just slept on the sofa." T say something about the house, and introduce the word "rent". T asks the students to pair up and ask about their house specifically whether they pay rent or not and some of the things they have in the house. T does WCFB to check what they've talked about.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To review the vocabulary needed in identifying countable and uncountable nouns.

T shows a picture of the house plan asks the WC about what they can say. Students will have so many answers and will be directed to proceed to their next work which is matching the pictures with their names. S work on their own first. After a given time, they will exchange papers and check the answers in together will check the answers. T shows powerpoint for the correct answers and emphasize the correct stress on the given words.

Highlighting (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language which is how much and how many

T shows a picture of a couple asks the class what they think. T elicit the word "rent" or looking for a flat or house. T shows the house plan and lead them to read the advertisement or the information the couple is reading. T provides the class a handout to check on the information provided. Time is set for 2 minutes only. Early finishers can write their answers on the board. S exchange papers and check the answers of their partners. T takes 2 sentences from the exercise and highlight their forms. 1. How much is the rent every month? ₤700 How much + is + noun 2. How many bedrooms are there in the flat? 2 How many + are + noun T highlights the how much and how many on asking how they got the answers. T unlock the words countable and uncountable nouns, shows the chart and give examples.

Clarification (2-3 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

To check the S understanding on countable and uncountable nouns, Exercise 4a Individual work then checked by pairs. WCFB will follow as we answer excercise 4b.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice of how much and how many

T provides a controlled practice on the proper use of how much and how many. Sts work on exercise 5a individually. However, early finishers can come and write down their answers. When the WC is done, they exchange papers with partners and provide WCFB.

Free Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T asks each of them to write 1 how much sentence and 1 how many sentence. After the given time, each pair goes in front. Share to the class the questions they wrote.
