Demo Lesson
Beginners level

Description

A basic needs analysis. I am aware that the students are from a variety of language learning backgrounds so I expect that there may well be some disparity in terms of linguistic competence. By the end of the lesson the students should be better able to introduce themselves to each other and find out personal information by asking each other questions relating to : name, age, where they are from; where they live, and occupation

Materials

Abc balloon

Main Aims

  • To conduct a basic needs analysis. I am aware that the students are from a variety of language learning backgrounds so I expect that there may well be some disparity in terms of linguistic competence.* By the end of the lesson the students should be better able to introduce themselves to each other and find out personal information by asking each other questions relating to : name, age, where they are from; where they live, and occupation

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide revision of numbers so that the students can ask each other about their ages To practise controlled speaking using the present simple tense.

Procedure

Icebreaker (5-7 minutes) • To Introduce myself and learn the ss’ names

Demo by throwing the balloon and saying my own name, then get the ss to do the same: The ss have to try to stop the balloon falling on to the floor

Exposure 1 (20-25 minutes) • To check numbers so that ss will be ready to ask and answer questions about age. To provide ss with an accurate written record and help some to remember To familiarise ss with the question form – now they can practise

Use number cards to flash up in front of students, double check 14/40 type pronunciation problems, then get ss to match numbers to words Flash up on W/B and mark stress appropriately – monitor handouts for completing the table task. Demo Demo/Elicit questions then get the ss to ask name and age What’s your name? How old are you?

Exposure 2 (10-15 minutes) • To introduce the concept of ‘from’ ‘live’, gradually building up their supply of questions

Use map and demo/elicit questions – from & live Ensure ss re-cap where possible Where do you live? Where are you from?

Exposure 3 (20-25 minutes) • To ascertain how many job-related words ss already know To provide full written record for ss to take away

Use job flashcards asking ‘What’s her/his job?’ Mime if necessary and check What’s your job? / What do you do? Board/Elicit forms Ss write down jobs

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To get ss to consolidate what they have learned so far – chance to make mistakes, build confidence, etc

Demo activity – get ss up and moving, play funky music and get trainees to join in, thus making the experience more ‘authentic’
