Procedure (32-43 minutes)
The teacher gives the students clear and simple instructions: At first, the teacher shows the students a picture of a worried student before the exam and asks them some questions to activate them: “Do you have exams soon?” “How do you feel before exams?” “Do you study many hours?” “What problems do students usually have before exams?” After listening to their answers. I will ask them: What do you think we will talk about today?
The teacher says:'' You are going to read a web page.” The teacher asks them to read the questions first for 5 sec: Why is Alice asking for advice? What advice do people give her? Work alone. Read quickly. Don’t worry about every word. You have 3 minutes. Ok, work in pairs and answer the questions. After their discussion Check answers together
“Work alone. Read again and underline all examples of ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’. You have 2 minutes. They will underline 4 should and 2 shouldn’t. Then ask them to discuss, and then show them the answers.
The teacher writes some sentences from the reading passage. As: you should find a study buddy. and asks them: Is this advice or an order? Advice Is it a good idea? Yes Is it 100% necessary? No then put another sentence. As: You shouldn’t study for 12 hours. Then ask: Is this a good idea? No Am I advising her to do it? No Do I think it’s a bad idea? Yes And to clarify the form write: Affirmative: Subject + should + base verb You should study. She should sleep earlier. Negative: Subject + shouldn’t + base verb You shouldn’t watch TV. She shouldn’t go to bed late. The pronunciation: drill chorally and individually. Then, for checking the understanding, compare it with the difference between should and must: Use clear CCQs to clarify the difference:- Is it a rule? (No) Is it advice? (Yes) Provide some examples on the board: You must wear a seatbelt. (law) You should sleep early. (advice) For SHOULD: Do we use it to give advice? (Yes) Is it strong like ‘must’? (No) Can the person choose? (Yes) For SHOULDN’T: Is it advice against something? (Yes) Is it a good idea? (No)
The teacher says to the students, “Look at the sentences. Remake the sentences and complete them with should or shouldn’t. Work alone. You have five minutes.” After finishing, the teacher says, “Check your answers with your partner.”
Work in pairs. Student A: Read the passage in the first box to your partner,” What should I do?” Student B: Read the passage in the second box, “ I need some advice”. Give your partner some advice. Use should or shouldn’t. Give at least three pieces of advice. Then change roles. You have eight minutes.”
Teacher says: Let’s check some good sentences I heard. (Write 2–3 good examples on the board) Then: I heard some mistakes. Let’s correct them together. Do you have any questions? Ok, see you next time!
