Making comparisons TP 4 Mattingly
Advanced intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students will learn structures for making comparisons through reading and exercises about koi and goldfish. The lesson will begin with students generating a list of differences between koi and goldfish. They will read a short passage and identify all phrases that are comparative. They will then sort these phrases based on the intensity of the contrast. Exercises will reinforce the correct form of "as...as" and "...than" structures. Pronunciation exercises will focus on stress and linked sounds. Students will end the class by writing sentences using the target language.

Materials

Abc Langauge analysis form
Abc ZOOM WHITEBOARD

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of "as...as" and "...than" structures for making comparisons in the context of discussing exotic koi fish.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in word stress and linked sounds.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will be shown a slide with images of koi and goldfish and asked to list differences between the two. Their sentences will be written on the slides.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for learning about comparatives through a discusion of koi.

The students will be assigned a short text from p. 40 of Face to Face called "Living Jewels." They will first read for gist and answer 2 questions: What is one advantage of having koi as pets, and one is one disadvantage. They will be given 4 minutes to read the text and mark the passages that show a comparison. This will be done using google docs -- they will each have a sheet to mark. We will then review it together as a class.
