The Way We Are ... Lesson A
301 level

Description

In this lesson, the students will learn to talk about people's behaviour using manner adverbs and adjectives.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Adjective + noun and Verb + manner adverbs patterns in the context of personality adjectives

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review when and if clauses

Procedure

Before you begin (8-10 minutes) • Introduction of the whole unit

Provide them with an overview of the unit using the Can Do part. Go through the pictures and make the students guess about the people and their personality. Try to recycle the following language pattern: "The woman/man with/in ..... looks ......" e.g. The woman in the gray suit looks outgoing. Then follow up with the second question "Who would you like to meet? Why?"

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start the class with boarding the following sentence: "Do you need to slow down?" Try to elicit situations where the students are impatient .

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

Ask the students to do the quiz individually. And then compare their results with their partners.

Highlighting and Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Board the sentences in exercise D and ask them to identify the correct alternative by searching the text. Then just ask them to listen to more examples on track 1.03 (the examples and the categorizations are on page 3, however, let them come up with a rule on their own) and come up with some sort of rule to categorize them.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give the students some time to do exercises 1-6 of part A in pairs then go through the questions in details focusing on each and every blank.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask the students to discuss the following situations in their groups. "Are these true in your culture? People here talk very fast so you have to listen carefully. People here drive recklessly so you have to be extra careful when crossing the street. Students in Safir work hard to get good results so we have to study hard as well. ... Your ideas ... "
