W10-D2-Past Perfect

Description

This lesson introduces the Past Perfect to show that one past action happened before another past event. Students learn the form (had + past participle), use timelines to understand "earlier past", and practice choosing Past Perfect vs Past Simple in context. The lesson ends with a short speaking task where students narrate a case-style sequence using the target tense.

Main Aims

  • To enable students to accurately use the Past Perfect to describe an earlier past action before another past event.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To form the Past Perfect correctly (affirmative, negative, questions).
  • To identify the earlier and later past actions using timelines and sequencing language.
  • To distinguish when Past Perfect is necessary vs optional in a narrative.
  • To use Past Perfect in a short spoken narrative with clear sequencing.

Procedure

Activation (25-30 minutes) • Wake students up and promote spontaneous speaking without focusing on the day's grammar.

Write 8 "Would you rather...?" questions on the board (fun, non-grammar-linked), e.g.: -Would you rather talk like a robot or sing everything you say? -Would you rather only eat spicy food or only eat sweet food? -Would you rather have a pet dragon or a pet unicorn? Students discuss in pairs for 2 minutes per question. Rule: each student must ask one follow-up question each round. Switch partners after 4 questions. Whole-class share: nominate 3 students to report their partner's funniest answer.

Vocabulary (13-15 minutes) • Provide precise vocabulary to support sequencing and case-style narration during practice and production.

Vocabulary: prior to, preceding, initially, to overlook, to recall, presenting complaint, history of present illness (HPI), onset, triggering factor, baseline -For each item: give a simple definition + one model sentence. -Students repeat the model sentence (choral or individual). -Students copy words + one example sentence into notebooks.

Presentation (28-30 minutes) • Clarify the meaning of "earlier past" and teach accurate form using timelines.

Draw a timeline with two past points (Event A - Event B). Write two sentences on the board: -"When I arrived, the appointment had already started." -"The appointment started at 8:00." Elicit: Which happened first? Which happened second? Projects the slides. Explain: Past Perfect shows the action completed before another past moment. Add two more examples connected to their context: "The patient looked worse because the owner had overlooked the early signs." "By the time we examined the dog, dehydration had progressed." Ask them for more examples.

Controlled Practice (18-20 minutes) • Develop accuracy using Past Perfect vs Past Simple and correct Past Perfect forms.

Students work individually. Exercise 1: choose the correct tense (Past Simple or Past Perfect). Exercise 2: complete the sentence using Past Perfect Whole-class feedback: teacher elicits answers, writes correct versions, and highlights: -missing "had" -wrong past participle -incorrect event order

Production (23-25 minutes) • Use Past Perfect meaningfully to narrate a clear case sequence.

Students work in pairs. They write a medical case. Give them a structure to follow on the board (no long writing): -Presenting complaint: ... -Initially, ... -Onset: ... -Prior to the visit, the owner had... -By the time we examined..., the patient had... -Triggering factor: ... -Baseline: ... Requirements: At least 4 Past Perfect sentences Use at least 4 vocab words from today Pairs rehearse and present orally. Listening pair asks 2 follow-up questions. Teacher monitors and notes common errors for wrap-up.
