Materials
Main Aims
-
To reinforce students' accurate use of Present Perfect, Present Perfect vs Past Simple, and Present Perfect Continuous before the weekly test.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To reactivate Week 9 tense meaning through fast retrieval practice.
-
To improve accuracy with time expressions (for/since, already/yet/just, ever/never, today/this week, yesterday/last week).
-
To reduce common errors (wrong tense choice, missing auxiliaries, incorrect participles).
-
To assess independent control of Week 9 grammar in a timed test.
Procedure (105-120 minutes)
Students sit in a circle or semi-circle (inside or outside). Put 3 prompts on the board: -One good thing from your weekend -One thing you did / watched / ate -One plan for this week Students speak freely, classmates ask follow-up questions. Teacher participates naturally.
Students go outside. Divide students into 2 teams (adjust team size as needed). Place buzzer(s) 10-15 meters from the starting line. Explain rules clearly: -One runner per team per question -Correct answer = 1 point -Wrong answer = very light energy reset Rotate runners so everyone participates.
Rally Rounds (approx. 9 minutes each x 4 rounds). Round 1 - Choose the Correct Option (PP / PS / PPC) Teacher reads a sentence with 2-3 options. First runner to touch buzzer answers. If correct: 1 point; if wrong: energy reset + other team can try. Round 2 - Fix the Sentence (common Week 9 errors) Teacher reads an incorrect sentence. Runner must correct it completely. Round 3 - Explain the Choice (1 short reason) Give two similar sentences; runner chooses the correct one and gives one short reason. Round 4 - Create the Sentence (context - correct tense) Teacher gives a context; runner produces one correct sentence using the target tense.
Students return to the classroom and sit down. Teacher explains: -Test covers only Week 9 -Individual and silent -Duration: 40 minutes -Answer procedural questions only Distribute tests face down and begin.
Students complete the test individually. The teacher monitors quietly. Give a 10 and 5-minute warning. Collect tests at the end.
Students stand up. Guide a short cool down: deep breath in/out (x3), shoulder rolls, neck stretch. Thank students for effort and briefly preview Tuesday, Past Perfect.
