Description

In this lesson, students will extend their knowledge of Present Simple and Present Continuous and they will be given practice in speaking for fluency and accuracy in a related context to the target language of the lesson.

Materials

  • To provide review of Present Simple and Present Continuous tenses in the context of languages

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of languages.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask ss to read the sentences and ask about their ideas. The students say what they understood about the meaning. Ask the ss if the meaning is in general or not. State verbs: ask about the difference between the other verbs and give some examples of the state verbs.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ask the students to go to page 152 and read the audioscript, then find some examples for the three rules. Compare their answers with their pairs. Students share their answers with the class.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To revise basic knowledge about the target language.

Give some examples of present simple and present continuous sentences. Use time expressions to show the difference. Ask the students to expain the rules to each other first, then to the class. Keep the explanation and the sentences on the board.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give the text "Machine translation" to the students and tell them to fill in the blanks using the words in brackets. Emphasize that they have to use the correct form of the words. Check it together in the end.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Tell the students to read the situations in part 4 and ask them what they would say in those situations. They need to use the verbs in brackets to guide them. They work in pairs and share their sentences with the class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Tell the students to discuss the questions in Speaking part, exercise 2 and then, they prepare a goal's card for themselves using the useful phrases.

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Tell the students to work in pairs and ask each other the questions in Speaking part, exercise 1. Tell them that they can use the useful phrases given below.
