Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about a knight and dragon in the context of a story.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of vocabulary and phrases in the context of a story about a knight and a dragon.
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice of a story in the context of a knight and dragon.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Elicitation of the key vocabulary by a listening activity, e.g. "It's got 4 legs, it can run fast, it's got a tail, it can jump" -> "A horse" planned: knight, castle, horse, sword, forest, cave, dragon optional: rabbit, monkey

Pre-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students think what might happen in the story and order some key flashcards of the story on their tables. Key flashcards provided: knight, dragon, monkey, rabbit, forest, cave 1. Whole class example. 2. Teacher -> student example 3. Open student -> student example 4. Pair work (student -> student)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

Students will listen for gist and check their prediction about the sequence of the story. Students will correct their "plot" on the table to get the right order of events. Story will be retold if necessary in case not all students should get the right order.

While-Listening #2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more listening tasks and TPR to memorize the sequence of events

Students will get up and perform the actions/decriptions in the story by acting them out. I will set up appropriate examples to support their creativity by miming.

Post-Listening #1 (3-4 minutes) • To

Students think about and choose from a set of possible titles for the story.

Post-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to retell the story, memorize it and improve their pronunciation

Students retell the story. 1. Whole class example. (Chorally, take out flashcards bit by bit.) 2. Teacher -> student example 3. Open student -> student example 4. Pair work (student -> student)
