Teaching practice 1 Main aim: Vocab
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson the students will increase their understanding of different ways to express modes of travel and transportation. The lesson will begin with a word search, with all of the words related to travel, they will be asked to find as many words as possible without the word list. Students will then discuss transport and transportation in Istanbul before moving on to a reading exercise about transport in Edinburgh. Ss will discuss the variation of transport available and how easily accessible it it. The exercise has gap fills with two possible answers for each gap, the class will work in pairs to choose the right one. There will be an answer key on the walls around the classroom which Ss will check at the end of the task. There will be a focus on some of the irregular verbs in the text for example catch a bus, there will be a class brainstorm of the types of transportation we can catch before completing their own mind maps concerning some of the other verbs. The finished maps will be stuck up on the walls for the Ss to compare, before providing them with an answer key and group feedback. Finally if there is time Ss will be asked to write their own transportation guides about Istanbul, Ss will then read one another's and decide which is the most useful.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of collocative verbs in the context of using transportation and travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of transport and travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in travel wordsearch (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Give Ss the word search handout without the word list and ask them to find as many words related to travel in a given time frame before providing them with the answer key and see who got the most.

Exposure to context of transport and travel (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through discussion and questions

I will ask Ss about how they travel around Istanbul to get them talking about transportation. Then I will provide them with ex 1. The Ss will discuss in pairs, answering the questions, Ending with some general whole class feedback and finding out if they think that Istanbul is an easy city for tourists to travel around in.

Introduction to Edinburgh ex (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target context

I will ask the Ss if they know anything about Edinburgh while showing them some relevant pictures on the board. I will then tell them to have a quick read of the text to tell me if they think that Edinburgh is easy to travel around.

Introduction to collocative verbs (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with new ways of referring to using transportation.

Ss will now be asked to carefully read ex 2 in pairs and choose the correct answers. There will be 3 answer keys on the walls around the classroom where students can check their answers. Then I will deal with any questions with the whole class.

Clarification and controlled practice (8-10 minutes) • To check that students have understood the concept and practice

I will create a spider diagram of catch on the board and ask the class what kind of transportation they can catch and drill them. Then I will provide a hand out of a mind map of the main verbs from ex 2 and have them brainstorm in small groups what transport words can go with the verbs. They can use the Edinburgh text to help.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss will put their handouts on the wall and check one another's to see if they can add anything. I will then provide the answer key and deal with any questions.

Free Practice if time (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

If time Ss in small groups will work together to create their own tourist information guide about transport in Istanbul. They can use the Edinburgh ex to help them. Again these will be placed on the wall and Ss will decide which one is the most useful for tourists. While they are working I will monitor and make notes of any errors with the TL. If there is still time I will write these on the board and correct them with the whole class. If there is no time for writing, I will have students work in groups to compete ex 3 and take some general feedback.
