Main Aims

  • By the end of the this lesson, learners will have practised reading a text for gist, specific in formation and detailed comprehension on the topic of XYZ

Subsidiary Aims

  • Learners will also practice their oral fluency on the topic of XYZ

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To establish the focus of the lesson and engage students in the topic/context before reading

- Tell learners the focus of the lesson: reading - Generate interest in the topic using XYZ - Share responses in feedback

Pre-Teaching Vocabulary (optional) (3-5 minutes) • To ensure learners understand any lexis essential to understanding the text or completing the tasks that go with it

- Set the matching task - Ss complete individually - Ss peer check - Show answer key, concept check some select items if necessary

Reading for Gist (3-5 minutes) • To give learners an overview of the text and practice the subskill of reading for gist

- Set the task - Ss complete individually - Ss peer check - Monitor for any issues - Elicit answer in feedback

Reading for Specific Information (4-6 minutes) • To further familiarise learners with the text and to practice the subskill of reading for specific information/scanning

- Set the task - Ss complete individually - Ss peer check - Monitor for any issues - Show answer key and clarify any difficulties

Reading for Detailed Comprehension (10-12 minutes) • To understand the content of the text in depth and to practice the subskill of reading for detailed comprehension

- Set the task - Ss complete individually - Peer check - Monitor for comprehension issues - Elicit and clarify problem questions - Show answer key for remaining questions - Check for concensus

Follow Up Task (optional) (10-15 minutes) • To respond to the text and further personalise/practice oral fluency skills on the topic

- Set the task - Ss personalise the topic in two or threes - Monitor and show interest in the discussions - Ss share responses in feedback - Acknowledge their contributions in terms of content - Do some error correction if time (optional) - Round off the lesson
