Description

In this lesson the student will be exposed to the language used in the business environment, and particularly he/she will be learning business-related skills in addition to English learning. HThe student will specifically learn the about problem-solving skills and Minto Pyramid, so its a 2 lesson program, which can be expanded into 10 sessions in case the student prefers going deeper into the topic of improving the communication and persuasion-related skills as well as problem-solving and project management. The lesson is based on the TED talks video by Jason Fried "Why work doesn't happen at work"

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of project management in the context of communications skills and problem solving

Subsidiary Aims

  • The program is divided into two lessons, so the first lesson will cover Minto Pyramid while the second will be focused on problem-solving skills

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

to show the first part of the video, approx 2-3 min and ask the student if the presenter sounds confident and lays out his ideas in a structured manner.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

to ask the student to present the latest proposal he/she has made recently at work. Pay attention to the structure and language used during the presentation. The presentation can be done as a regular one where the student stands in the middle of the room, or it can also be done as a face to face conversation.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

To show and clarify for the student the Minto Pyramid, and how to use it in order to set out the ideas, presenations and thoughts clearly and with a structure in order to sound confident, professional and persuasive. To emphasize that this skill can be applied both in professional and personal environment. To nailpolish the previously made presentation of the student, clarifying and changing the vocab if necessary,

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Give the student 5 min to finetune his/presentation in accordance with the topic learnt during the lesson and then test him/her again.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Let the student choose any topic he/she would like to present to, it can be related to any part of his/her life, give some time for preparation and allow the student present the idea in accordance with the skills acquired at the lesson. Provide the necessary Feedback and fine-tune the speech. As a follow-up, the student can prepare his future presentation or proposal and then we can improve it in accordance with Minto Pyramid.
