Forming adjectives
uper-intermediate level


In this lesson students will learn how to form adjectives using suffixes and prefixes.The lesson starts by a discussion about inspiration.com after that I will check students' understanding of suffixes and prefixes and I will ask them to scan some words from a text to work on them as a controlled practice. Moreover, students will have free practice as a speaking activity, and then after the aim is completed, students will be engaged in some vocabulary activities and exercises .

Main Aims

  • To enable students form Adjectives using prefixes and suffixes .

Subsidiary Aims

  • To expose students to some real life vocabulary


Lead in (5-7 minutes) • In order to engage students

write inspiration.com on the board and ask what they think this is. Elicit answers and ask if they think such websites are useful.

presentation (12-15 minutes) • Brainstorm students'ideas about suffixes and prefixes

Eliciting from students some examples and draw their attention to the language notes and elicit further examples.

Controlled practice (10-12 minutes) • to check students' understanding of suffixes and prefixes

Put SS in pairs and give them time to complete the adjectives in bold in ex . 1 on pg 22. Encourage them to guess the meaning of the vocabulary from the context . check answers as a class .

Free practice/ speaking (10-12 minutes) • To encourage students use the target language

Put SS in pairs and give them time to discuss what characteristics they most admire or find annoying. Encourage them to agree disagree and to give reason for their choice .

vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • To help students discover the meaning of the word sympathetic

Pus SS in pairs and ask them to discuss the questions. Monitor and help.

Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To check student's understanding

Get SS to do ex 6/7/8 from WB on page.15/16 . Monitor and check answers
