Description

In this lesson, the SS will be engaged in a focused vocabulary exercises, receptive skill development by speaking and reading for the gist.SS will have the opportunity to read and talk about different crime types.

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in the integrated skills of reading for the gist and details, and speaking fluency in the context of crime.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce related vocabulary.

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • introduce SS to the topic

Present different crime pictures on OHP and ask them to ellicit the crime vocabulary present the picture on page 31 on OHP. Engage SS interest by asking them to say what is happening in the picture pg 31. try to ellicit crime, anti-social behaviour, vandalism, graffiti, begging...

Lead-in (2-3 minutes)

ask the SS to do exercise one. ask them to look at the picture pg.31 and think three possible interpretations of the situation. ( monitor and help if needed) ICQs ask few SS to report to the WC.

Reading for the gist (4-6 minutes) • SS get the general point of the passage

SS focus on the picture and ellicit what is happening by skimming through the text. pass out the handout of Ex.2. SS skim through to answer the Qs of Ex 2 on page 30. SS are not required to understand everything in the text. SS answers . ( students compare their answers with others and they try to find answers somewhere on the class walls)

Reading for details (12-14 minutes) • students get more information

ask SS to read and answer the questions. Ex 3 pg 30. SS have to read carefully for details. put SS in groups. ask the SS to check their anwsers by comparing them with the other group.

Controlled practice (10-12 minutes) • Checking SS understanding

Put SS in pairs and ask them to underline the words /phrases in the text. Ex.4 pg 30. Remind the SS that they are looking for phrases not individual words. Monitor and help if necessary. Change pattern and hand out the answers for SS to check.

Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • Provide context and use for the new vocabulary

Hand out the matching exercise to the SS and ask them to match the words with their meanings. Remind them that they can go back to the text for help. monitor if necessary. Hand out the answers and get the SS to check in pairs.

Speaking (3-5 minutes) • Practice the new Vocabulary

Put the SS in groups and ask them to look for any harsh vocabulary. Tell them to discuss their opinion in open class. Give a general Feedback.
