Listening
pre-Intermediate (B1) level

Description

In this lesson, students develop their listening skills through a guided listening activity. The lesson begins with a lead-in to activate the background knowledge, like I will ask them some questions which are related to listening, such as how often do you clean up your room? And what kind of housework do you do? and pre-teach key words. Students first need to read the questions for 1 minute before doing the listening part, then listen for gist to understand the main idea, followed by a second listening for specific details. finally students practice in a speaking activity related to the topic to personalize the content, and they will check the answers first in pairs or group and then we will discuss their own cleaning habits.

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about Housework in the context of cleaning habits

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show the picture from the book on page 31 and ask students questions about housework and cleaning habits to activate background knowledge. Students discuss whether they like cleaning and who does housework at home.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will pre-teach key word items such as "neat", "chores", and "cleaning products" using pictures and simple definitions to ensure students understand the main topic before listening.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Before playing the listening, I will give them 1 minute to read the questions, and then students listen to the video blog for the gist and answer a general question about the main idea of the text, like exercise B. They focus on confirming their prediction and understanding the main idea. Students compare answers in pairs before the whole class feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students listen again and answer the detailed comprehension questions in Exercise D. They focus on listening for specific information. Students check their answers in pairs before the whole class feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students discuss which cleaning tips they found most useful and talk about their own cleaning habits in pairs, and then the whole class.
