Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of modals for speculations about the present in the context of Justice and law

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and clarification of Courtroom vocabulary in the context of a kidnapping trial

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students, and provide context for the target language through a situation

The T gives a short presentation to set the lesson's context and expose students to the lesson's vocabulary by showing a few pictures and eliciting the target words.

Presentation (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, and pronunciation of the target language

1. In pairs, the T asks students to complete activity 1 on p. 138. Then check the answers as a class 2. Ss are referred to Act 2, p.138, and have a class discussion. Ss are encouraged to justify their answers. 3. The T references the highlighted words and has Ss define them as best they can in their pairs. Check answers. Then have Ss work individually to read the text and complete the activity. - Ss to compare answers with their partners. Then answers are checked as a class. 4. Ss work in the same pairs to complete the activity. Check answers as a class. Ss are asked to explain how they got their answers

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss play a Kahoot to assess their knoweldge on the learnt vocabulary

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Divide the students into 2 groups and have them, and have 1 person at a time from each group explain the word in the cut-up without saying the word.

Exposure (3-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a situation

The T Elicits different modal verbs (have to, must, can’t, can, could). Then have Ss look at phrases 1–5 in exercise 5 -The T asks when the action is happening (present) - The T asks a few CCQs to check Ss' understanding: e.g, Is the person sure, unsure about what he is thinking?

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- Explain that we can also use modal verbs to speculate in the present. - Have Ss complete the activity (5) individually. - Check answers as a class.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

In exercise 6, the T refers Ss to the Grammar box and asks them to read through it individually and ask any questions if they do not understand something. - Check the meaning Then have Ss read the Watch out! box. Finally, the T gets Ss to complete the activity individually. Check answers as a class. - To check their understanding, the T asks a few CCQs and asks Ss to fill in the gaps of a few sentences.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In exercise 7, the T asks the Ss to complete the activity individually. Check answers as a class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-In exercise 8. the T models the activity using the example given. -Ss are asked to complete the activity individually, then compare answers with a partner. -Then check answers as a class. - Ss play a Kahoot

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In two groups, Ss play an online guessing game with zoomed-out pictures using modals to speculate about the picture
