The questions at the end will ask them to try to define the 5 phrasal verbs in bold. After 5 minutes they will be put in pairs for two minutes to discuss their answers. Come + into + something (NOT come + something + into) oOo pay off “she wants to pay off the mortgage” Pay all the money you owe Pay + (something) + off Pay + off + (something) OO Not the same as pay + someone + off Not the same as payoff (n), Oo pay back Maybe she can pay back what she owes me. Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will be put in pairs to practice using the phrasal verbs with questions and answers. The first one is written in detail, the others are for them to work out. The full list will be shared on google slides and then put into the chat once they are in BO rooms. Did you ever take out a loan? Yes, I took out a loan from the bank. No, I’ve never taken a loan out. Can you pay me back yet? If you buy a house, will you put money down? Have you ever come into some money? Did that guy try to rip you off? Did you pay off your car loan?

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will be shown prompts below. They will be asked to respond to one of the prompts using some of the target language. They will be given a minute to prepare their responses, then put in BO rooms for practice. Talk about one of the following using the phrasal verbs we have been practicing An experience borrowing or lending money. An experience buying something expensive (like a house or a car). You can talk about your experience, or the experience of someone you know.
